Crypto-Friendly Bank Erebor Seeks $1.5 Billion Financing with Pre-Money Valuation of $8 Billion

Crypto-friendly bank Erebor Bank, co-founded by Palmer Luckey and Joe Lonsdale, is seeking approximately $1.5 billion in financing, expected to be completed in a few weeks, with a pre-money valuation target of $8 billion. Institutions like a16z are listed as potential investors.

The project primarily provides crypto-friendly banking services, aiming to fill the gap left by the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. Erebor completed a $350 million financing in December 2025, with a valuation of $4.35 billion at that time.

After receiving final regulatory approval in February 2026, deposits surged from $1.1 billion at the end of March to about $4.6 billion by the end of July, adding nearly 400 new customers, with expectations of profitability within the year.

Potential investors include Lux Capital, Human Capital, Valor Equity Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, and SV Angel, while existing investors 8VC and Haun Ventures will continue to participate.

Erebor plans to offer USD stablecoin deposits and payment services and has participated in providing a $200 million credit facility to nuclear startup Valar Atomics.

In market mechanisms, tech and crypto-oriented banks have received high valuation financing due to rapid deposit expansion, with funds flowing from Silicon Valley VCs to emerging digital banks, while traditional banks face pressure in serving startup and crypto clients.

This round of financing will support its compliance with leverage ratio requirements and expand its lending business.

Erebor is driven by Anduril founder Palmer Luckey and Joe Lonsdale of 8VC, positioning itself as a digital bank serving tech, defense, and crypto startups, directly addressing the market gap after the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank.

The capital path is reflected in the rapid increase in valuation from $4.35 billion to $8 billion pre-money, accompanied by nearly quadrupled deposits, motivated by the quick customer acquisition post-regulatory approval and the Silicon Valley network, establishing a high capital adequacy ratio for lending capacity.

Similar to other new banks targeting specific ecosystems that have rapidly emerged and received high valuation financing post-crisis, it is currently transitioning from licensing approval to scaled operations in crypto and tech-friendly banking.

Essentially, it fills a market gap and concentrates capital, with the mechanism being that as traditional banks tighten their services to crypto and high-risk tech clients, specialized digital banks quickly absorb deposits and valuations through regulatory compliance and ecosystem networks.
