Mike Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg, met with Kenyan President William Ruto during the UN General Assembly in New York to discuss how front-of-package warning labels can help families make healthier choices and save lives, while also addressing Kenya's acceleration of clean energy transition and ocean protection.

Kenya has launched a 2025 nutrition profile model, setting thresholds for salt, total sugars, total fats, and saturated fats, proposing to use black octagonal warnings on the front of packaging instead of difficult-to-read back nutrition labels. Independent assessments show that about 90% of pre-packaged foods from companies like Coca-Cola, Nestlé, and local firms such as Brookside Dairy and Manji Foods will require labeling due to exceeding limits, with about two-thirds classified as unhealthy according to the international Nutri-Score.

A pilot study tested three types of labels on 2,198 adults in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Garissa, finding that black warnings were more effective than red and green octagons in identifying high sugar, salt, and fat content and reducing selections. Advocates are pushing to link warnings and restrictions on marketing to children, impose taxes on specific foods, and bundle public procurement guidelines to address the rising rates of non-communicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension.

The same meeting also discussed establishing a green technology acceleration center in Kenya to scale up clean technology; both parties agreed to collaborate on the second Clean Cooking Summit hosted by Kenya in January 2027, showcasing approximately $600 million in clean cooking investment opportunities. Ruto expressed welcome for Bloomberg's investment interest in Kenya, hoping to attract more capital through its global network and showcase the Nairobi Securities Exchange.

On the ocean side, Kenya hosted the 11th Our Ocean conference in Mombasa in June, recording over 300 new commitments totaling about $6.4 billion, with Kenya alone making 50 commitments worth approximately $1.1 billion, covering marine protected areas, fisheries restoration, pollution reduction, and maritime security, while emphasizing nearshore renewable energy and the blue economy.

In terms of market mechanisms, the buyers are the Kenyan government and public health alliances seeking health policy endorsements and climate project implementations, while the sellers are food companies like Coca-Cola and Nestlé that need to reformulate or label their packaged foods, as well as suppliers of clean cooking and green technology. The event is driven by the UN General Assembly side meetings, with funding directed towards label compliance transformations, clean cooking equipment, and green acceleration centers, benefiting those who can leverage warnings to reformulate and access climate capital, while putting pressure on the existing packaged food supply chain where 90% of products may be labeled with black warnings.
