Choi Sung-soo's Poor Man's Map Goes Viral

Korean programmer Choi Sung-soo created the low-cost restaurant map Geoji Map after losing his job, attracting about 1.3 million visitors in its first month.

Choi, 34, became unemployed due to AI-related restructuring and has been living on severance pay, cutting his daily food budget to about 10,000 KRW; another report states his actual budget is between 10,000 and 12,000 KRW.

He collected information from his personal experiences of searching for cheap meals and embedded restaurant data into the map service. The platform launched on March 20, helping users locate low-cost dining options based on meal prices, with some dishes priced as low as 3,000 KRW.

The platform's early information sources came from frugal consumption communities and user needs, rather than traditional restaurant review logic: its focus is not on taste ratings, social media popularity, or decor style, but directly turning price into a map filter so users can quickly find restaurants within their limited daily budget.

The development of Geoji Map was also driven by generative AI programming tools. Reports indicate that Choi used OpenAI Codex and map APIs to build the website; this compressed what used to be a lengthy product development cycle for geographic information services into a project that independent developers can quickly validate.

In market dynamics, the demand side of the platform consists of consumers affected by dining inflation, employment pressure, and shrinking disposable income, particularly students, young workers, and low-budget individuals; restaurants attract new customers across regions through low-price tags. Funds have not immediately flowed to high-margin dining brands but rather to community restaurants with low rent, low average spending, and high turnover rates; businesses relying on location convenience, brand premium, or opaque pricing will face greater price comparison pressure.
