John Morgan, founder of the Morgan & Morgan personal injury law firm, claims he has altered his own billboards in college towns and other locations: painting black teeth, drawing glasses, and fabricating negative phrases about himself to make passing vehicles stop for photos. He admits these "vandalism" acts were planned and executed by himself, aiming for free publicity.

This tactic dates back at least to 2015. The first "vandalized" billboard in Orlando was around the city’s soccer team, where he told the Tampa Bay Times that vehicles were blocked for photos, TV stations came to film, and social networks shared the content. A billboard in Jackson, Mississippi, was altered to feature graffiti and dog ears, with the advertiser claiming the law firm ordered it; the firm once stated it would investigate who painted it. In 2023, similar clown wigs, red noses, and alterations of the slogan "For the People" to "For Fools" and "For Money" appeared in Orlando, Pensacola, Memphis, Pittsburgh, and Boston. Morgan emailed that only a genius would destroy their own billboards to gain tens of millions of dollars in free media from newspapers, TV, and Reddit.

The firm is one of the largest personal injury firms in the U.S., claiming to have recovered over $30 billion for clients. After the Supreme Court confirmed that lawyer advertising is protected speech in 1977, the firm was among the first to invest heavily in outdoor advertising. Morgan’s speech at the Outdoor Advertising Association in 2026 will still emphasize: one must be willing to self-deprecate; destroying billboards is one of the nationwide creative strategies; he spends hundreds of millions annually on outdoor advertising. Personal injury clients are often one-time, unfamiliar with the lawyer, and attention converts to leads faster than reputation.

Fake graffiti turns "Who did this?" into a news hook, generating more shares than normal portrait billboards. Police often do not receive reports because the billboards are newly printed, not vandalized. The controversy itself serves as a medium.

In market mechanics, this creates a funnel for malicious traffic to acquire clients. Buyers are drivers who stop to take photos and local media reporting "the billboard was destroyed"; sellers are those who would have paid full price for advertising space. Funds saved from the outdoor budget for a second round of media distribution are redirected to lead generation calls.
