Elon Musk stated, "We are still doing Mars," reaffirming that SpaceX has not abandoned its long-term goal of sending cargo and personnel to Mars and ultimately building a self-sustaining human settlement. This statement did not include new launch dates, mission structures, budgets, or timelines for crewed landings.

SpaceX, founded by Musk in 2002, has long made Mars settlement a core part of its mission narrative. The company currently relies on the Starship reusable heavy-lift launch system to advance high-frequency launches, orbital refueling, lunar missions, Starlink satellite deployments, and future deep space transportation capabilities, all of which are seen as prerequisites for the Mars program.

Starship has not yet executed a Mars mission. The company recently recovered a Starship vehicle from the Indian Ocean, but there are still several engineering aspects that have not been fully verified before it can achieve sustainable reuse of the Super Heavy booster, complete in-orbit propellant transfer, ensure long-term reliable deep space flight, and safely execute crewed round trips to Mars.

NASA's current direct mission requirements for Starship are focused on the Moon. NASA plans to use Starship HLS along with Blue Origin's Blue Moon lander to support the Artemis program, with the earliest goal of returning to the lunar surface around 2028; lunar missions can validate deep space communication, propellant management, landing operations, and long-term system reliability, but this does not mean that Mars missions have entered a confirmed execution phase.

Recently, SpaceX announced a $100 billion investment to build Starbase Louisiana in Louisiana, planning over 12 launch towers and more than 30 Starship flights per day. The company stated that this facility could support satellite deployments, orbital data centers, as well as lunar and Mars missions; whether the project can achieve planned production capacity still depends on construction progress, regulatory approvals, launch permissions, and the actual maturity of Starship's reuse.

Musk has previously given earlier predictions for Mars timelines than the current situation. In 2016, he stated that a crewed Mars mission could be possible as early as 2026; media analysis shows that SpaceX has yet to launch any unmanned or crewed rocket missions to Mars. Therefore, "still doing Mars" should be seen as a confirmation of direction rather than a commitment to an executable near-term launch window.

From a market mechanism perspective, the statement about Mars itself will not bring directly measurable commercial revenue or cash flow. The capital and orders that truly flow to SpaceX come from Starlink broadband services, U.S. government launch contracts, defense and NASA projects, commercial satellite launches, and data center infrastructure; these businesses provide funding and flight frequency for Starship development, launch site expansion, and deep space technology accumulation. Beneficiaries include rocket manufacturing, aerospace supply chains, satellite communications, and launch infrastructure participants, while the risks are borne by shareholders and creditors who fund high capital expenditures, technological delays, and regulatory uncertainties.
