Mastercard has launched its global digital wallet solution suite, Mastercard Wallet Pay, which covers contactless, QR code, and online payments, aiming to connect different wallets, platforms, and payment methods.

The company announced this in Singapore: global digital wallet users have exceeded 4.3 billion, expected to surpass 6 billion by 2030. Wallet Pay is a cloud-based capability that enables wallet service providers to issue cards, accept payments, and transfer funds without rebuilding infrastructure. Secure card issuance supports launching credit cards, debit cards, or prepaid cards within wallets; a unified digital and e-commerce experience allows merchants to accept both cards and wallets, integrating over 3.7 billion Mastercard credentials into digital wallets. The fund transfer feature covers over 200 countries and regions, with 150 currencies, allowing quick transfers between cards, wallets, and accounts. The acceptance side claims to connect to hundreds of millions of acceptance points and digital gateways, with over 150 million Mastercard merchant points and about 25,000 financial institutions listed on the product page.

Initial participants include Ant International's AlipayHK under the Alipay+ system, Mexico's Clip, Philippines' GCash, South Korea's KakaoPay, Malaysia's TNG eWallet, and Thailand's TrueMoney, as well as AXIAN, CRED, DaviPlata, Mercado Pago, MTN, and TenPay Global. Alipay+ connects over 50 e-wallets and banking apps, as well as payment systems from more than 10 countries, to batch connect partner wallets to Wallet Pay. AlipayHK claims this will supplement NFC alongside QR codes and expand acceptance beyond Hong Kong; Clip states that Mexico's consumer wallet Mi Clip has been designed for interoperability since its launch. The suite also includes Pay Local, which connects Mastercard credentials to local wallet QR codes, and the previously launched Wallet Services development kit.

The buy-side aims to bring domestic wallet users to the global acceptance network, while the sell-side seeks to integrate closed QR code ecosystems into the card organization framework. Funds flow from wallet balances or linked accounts through tokenized credentials to merchants and cross-border counterparts, with fees incurred for card issuance, transfer, and cross-border transactions. Beneficiaries are wallets that can expand internationally without building a separate acceptance network, while local payment systems that remain divided by borders and QR code standards face pressure—4.3 billion users represent growth potential, but actual transactions depend on whether national wallets can turn accounts into credentials usable on the Mastercard network.
