The Burning Glass Institute found that the employment situation for university graduates aged 22 to 34 is among the worst in nearly two decades, only worse than during the pandemic and the slow recovery after the 2007-2009 recession. In contrast, the unemployment rate for peers without a university degree is at its best level in nearly twenty years.

The absolute levels still favor education. The average unemployment rate for those aged 25 to 54 with a degree is about 2.7%, compared to 4.7% for high school diploma holders and about 3.6% for those who attended university but did not obtain a degree. The unemployment rate for recent bachelor's graduates aged 22 to 27 tracked by the New York Fed is 5.6%, while the overall labor force is about 4.2%, and peers without a four-year degree are at 7.2%. Unadjusted data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the unemployment rate for those aged 20 to 24 with a bachelor's degree or higher was 8.0% in August, down from 9.7% in July.

The structure indicates a mismatch between supply and job types. The number of university graduates continues to increase, with entry-level white-collar jobs being absorbed by models handling tasks such as organization, retrieval, and drafting; meanwhile, skilled trades and field services are facing shortages due to retirements of older workers and tightened immigration. The chief economist of the institute stated that this is not considered a temporary phenomenon. The Cleveland Fed estimates that the monthly rate of job finding or exiting the job market for unemployed bachelor's degree holders aged 22 to 27 has fallen below that of their high school-educated peers.

There is a stark differentiation in fields. Unemployment is lower in aligned career paths such as nursing and teaching; however, the unemployment rate for computer engineering majors is close to 8%, similar to that of anthropology majors. A University of Cincinnati undergraduate in international business and operations management submitted 70 applications but only received 3 interviews, subsequently shifting to an MBA program. The Oxford Economics Institute reports that since mid-2023, the increase in unemployment has been concentrated among new entrants who cannot find jobs.

Older degree holders have not experienced a simultaneous deterioration. The unemployment rate for those aged 25 and older with a bachelor's degree remains around 3%, lower than the overall rate. The issue lies in the entry ramp: remote work has made it harder for inexperienced individuals to receive on-site training, while high interest rates have pressured campus recruitment in technology, finance, law firms, and consulting, with LinkedIn data showing that hiring in these sectors is still 20% to 30% lower than pre-pandemic levels.

The market mechanism indicates a skills mismatch, not an overall collapse. Employers are seeking electricians, welders, nursing, and field service workers, while companies are replacing entry-level analytical positions with models; the supply side consists of new graduates holding only general liberal arts degrees and lacking verifiable skills. The beneficiaries are skilled tradespeople and professionals with clear career paths; the pressured group consists of those who view degrees as tickets to entry but face automation in entry-level white-collar jobs. Funding and positions are skewed towards shortage occupations, and the university premium remains, but the relative safety net has thinned compared to historical standards.
