The cross-chain protocol Router Protocol announced that after more than four years of operation, it has decided to cease operations, planning to complete the shutdown by September 30. The team cited reasons such as tight Web3 liquidity over the past two years, a shift in funding towards artificial intelligence, pressure on cross-chain transaction fees, high costs, and demand concentrating on a few chains.

In the past year, attempts at commercialization, technology licensing, and acquisition did not yield a viable solution to sustain the team. A total of 303,333,198 ROUTE tokens in the treasury will be permanently destroyed, and trading pairs will be delisted in coordination with centralized exchanges. Holders on exchanges must withdraw according to each exchange's withdrawal deadlines. No new plans related to ROUTE will be launched, although some technical components are planned to be open-sourced. The team stated that this is not the desired outcome, but the most honest choice for the community.

The fee model was designed to use all fees for token buybacks and destruction, leaving no operational reserves. After the solver was stolen in February 2025, about 80% was recovered through negotiations, while funds from another chain-level attack in July of the same year were not recovered. The token migrated from v1 to v2, with the un-migrated portion destroyed separately. Following the announcement, the price of ROUTE dropped to around $0.0001.

The shutdown is an exit of the operating entity, not an automatic redemption of on-chain assets. Funds in transit and exchange balances must be handled according to bridge and withdrawal windows. The open-sourced code preserves the technology, not market-making or customer service.

In market mechanisms, what is sold is the valuation premium of second-tier cross-chain tokens and similar bridges; what is bought are a few main chains with ongoing transactions and scaled interoperability layers. Beneficiaries are the leading bridges that can absorb the remaining routing demand; those under pressure are token holders and market makers whose treasury tokens are burned and whose order books are removed. Funds are shifting from infrastructure tokens with no income to applications and AI targets with transaction fees.

Burning unissued inventory reduces the apparent supply but does not recover the income that has already ceased.
