Apple Passes the Baton to Turnas

Tim Cook sent an internal memo to all employees on his last day as Apple CEO, confirming that he will not leave Apple but will step down as CEO, handing over daily leadership to John Turnas. Turnas will officially take over on September 1, while Cook will transition to the role of Executive Chairman of the Board.

In the letter, Cook attributed his personal achievements to the employees, stating that the Apple team made him "the best version of himself"; he emphasized that what he is most proud of is not the metrics presented in annual reports, but the ongoing organizational culture and sense of mission within Apple.

Cook reiterated Apple's belief that products have real significance, describing the responsibility to "make the world better than it was when people arrived" as the company's mission; he quoted Steve Jobs' expression of "leaving a mark in the universe," attributing Apple's output to the mutual promotion and collaboration among employees.

In the memo, Cook referred to his successor as "John" and stated that few understand the conditions required to create world-changing products like Turnas does; Turnas previously served as Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering at Apple, with core experience focused on hardware product development and engineering organization.

The letter deliberately defined the succession as a job transition rather than a company exit: Cook stated that he is "completely at peace" with the decision and expressed his intention to continue meeting with employees at Apple Park and around the world in his new role.

From a market mechanism perspective, Apple has tied the CEO transition to the continued involvement of the Board, reducing the risk of governance disruption: long-term shareholders benefit from Cook's strategic retention and Board continuity, while product, supply chain, and engineering teams will report directly to a CEO with a hardware background; Turnas's pressure lies in translating engineering execution capabilities into capital returns during the growth phase of AI, device forms, and services.
