Independent creator Cole Lee has publicly announced her joining OpenAI after a year of independent creation. She holds both undergraduate and master's degrees in computer science from Stanford and has previously worked at Windsurf and Spotify. After leaving traditional tech roles, she focused full-time on short videos covering artificial intelligence, design, and technology, collaborating with entities such as Anthropic, Google DeepMind, Adobe, Notion, and OpenAI.

The Stanford Daily recorded her transition from hackathon videos to weekly updates, with view counts reaching millions before and after graduation. She advocates that artificial intelligence should help people tell stories that would otherwise go untold, rather than replicate content that can already be produced. In her joining statement, she wrote: "Imagining the future is about creating the future."

OpenAI's creative team is also expanding. In 2025, Michael Tabtabai was appointed as the first Global Vice President of Creative, working alongside former colleague and Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch, and coordinating with the internal studio led by Executive Creative Director Zach Stubenvoll. The studio has already launched a large-scale branding campaign for ChatGPT. The position of Social Creative Director is publicly listed with a salary range of approximately $342,000 to $380,000 plus equity, requiring the creation of content across various platforms that encapsulates releases, research, and cultural moments. Stubenvoll's team is continuously seeking individuals skilled in research, storytelling, consumer products, hardware, and experimental creation.

The lab's recruitment focus has expanded from researchers and engineers to those who can translate models into aesthetics and narratives. The onboarding of creators internalizes external volume into brand capacity, but does not imply that the research direction will be dictated by short videos.

Once models enter consumer products, understanding and imagination are factored into the conversion funnel. The boundaries between the internal studio and external creators are being bridged through recruitment.

In market mechanisms, the buyers are model companies seeking cultural interpretation rights, while the sellers are verified creators capable of translating technology into visuals. The driving force is that consumer-grade products require stories, which is part of organizational expansion. Funding is flowing from marketing and equity packages into creative structures. Beneficiaries are creators who can bring client lists into the company, while those under pressure are external agencies still quoting traditional advertising rates, as well as the risks to brand consistency following organizational expansion.
