Tibo, head of Codex and ChatGPT at OpenAI, announced that paid ChatGPT users who are unable to access Astra on the same day will receive a storage reset, which will accumulate daily starting today; the team is working to increase availability, with the first batch expected to arrive in about three hours, and those without accounts can still register.

The storage reset is not an additional purchase limit, but a refresh of a usage window that exists in the account and can be manually triggered after it is exhausted, resetting approximately five hours and the weekly Codex limit while changing the reset date for the following week; if unused, it will remain until expiration, and successfully refreshing at least one window will consume it. Users can check "1 reset available" in the settings under usage on desktop, web, and command line. This is separate from instant resets purchased immediately and usage credits.

Astra is OpenAI's next main model, which slowed its release in August due to the inability to eliminate key network capabilities and tightened isolation testing. On September 3, ChatGPT and Codex experienced widespread failures, with multiple components such as dialogue, login, search, upload, voice, proxy, workspace, and desktop Codex all triggering alerts simultaneously, coinciding with the night before the model's release. The company did not attribute the failure to Astra, but the compensation policy is clearly based on "the number of days the paid plan could not access the new model."

Milestones for active Codex users have previously used full resets or storage resets to soothe limits: similar vouchers were issued when active users reached about 7 million in July and about 20 to 25 million in August. Complaints about limits being consumed too quickly include automatic reviews and backend suggestions running repeatedly, and excessive retries on failures, prompting the team to roll back and reclassify usage. Third-party sites even predict the next reset based on his posts.

In market mechanics, what is bought is the paid user's commitment not to unsubscribe during the phased release of the model, and what is sold is the wait for those unable to use Astra on the same day. The compensation is a future computing power window, not cash. The beneficiaries are developers who have paid, are nearing their quota, and are willing to store the reset; the pressured parties are the inference clusters and accounts in regions yet to be served. Issuing daily vouchers transforms interruptions from product accidents into account liabilities, and incorporates account opening actions into the compensation announcement, using the failure window to continue attracting new users.
