Alpen announced a partnership with Circle to integrate USDC issued by Circle and the cross-chain transfer protocol CCTP at the mainnet launch, allowing Bitcoin holders to borrow and trade USD without selling or migrating their coins to other chains. Jeremy Allaire shared this product announcement.

The process involves destroying USDC on a supported network and minting an equivalent amount on the Alpen side, creating native USD rather than a third-party wrapped coin. Alpen claims to create a financial market on Bitcoin, with the mainnet scheduled for later this year. The promotional tagline is to bring regulated USD liquidity to a Bitcoin-centric lending platform while keeping BTC on the Bitcoin settlement layer.

In the same week, Circle opened another Bitcoin-collateralized USD borrowing channel for institutions: digital asset collateralized loans on Circle Mint, where clients deposit BTC, mint cirBTC at a 1:1 ratio, and then borrow USDC from markets like Morpho, with Arc and Ethereum initially available, excluding New York clients. cirBTC is custodied by Circle National Trust and reserves can be verified on-chain. Binance recently conducted a private placement of approximately 1.237 million shares at about $80.84 million, locked for up to two years, and renewed a five-year USDC distribution; Circle's circulating USDC in Q2 was $73.3 billion, with on-chain transactions totaling $14.8 trillion for the quarter.

Alpen addresses the question of "where does USD come from in Bitcoin scenarios" for retail and developers, while Circle Mint resolves the issue for institutions to access USD without selling coins. Both lines transform Bitcoin from a purely settlement asset into a collateralizable asset, with pricing power still residing in Circle's minting and burning. CCTP integrates Alpen into the existing USDC network, allowing swaps, payments, and treasury rebalancing to occur cross-chain without needing to go through a new bridge's wrapping warehouse.

In market mechanics, the product sold is USD that can be used without selling BTC, while the buyer acquires Circle's minting rights and interest from reserve US Treasuries. Loan demand comes from Bitcoin addresses looking to leverage or provide liquidity, while USD supply comes from USDC holders. Beneficiaries include issuers and protocols capable of collateral liquidation, while those under pressure are the old bridges that charge fees for wrapped coins. Funds flow from BTC collateral to USDC liabilities, then from reserves to short-term debt.
