xAI Co-founder Igor Babuschkin's River AI Completes $1.1 Billion Financing

River AI, a full-stack AI company founded by xAI co-founder Igor Babuschkin, announced today that it has completed $1.1 billion in financing. This round was led by General Catalyst and AMP PBC, with strategic investments from NVIDIA and AMD Ventures, and other investors including Y Combinator and Temasek.

This financing will accelerate River AI's development of powerful personal AI and provide tools for developers and enterprises to train, fine-tune, and deploy their own AI models.

Currently, most enterprises rely on general models trained on internet data, which are not tailored to specific businesses. Previously, building customized models required dedicated infrastructure teams, specialized hardware, and months of time, which most enterprises find difficult to afford.

With River's API, any enterprise can complete a complex reinforcement learning training task in 15 to 20 minutes without needing an infrastructure team, reducing costs by 2 to 4 times compared to closed-source alternatives.

River has launched an API that supports reinforcement learning and LoRA fine-tuning, positioning itself as a personal trainable assistant rather than just a general model that replaces human labor.

Market mechanisms are shifting capital towards open-source weights and enterprise-owned model training tools, with funding flowing from investors into customized AI infrastructure, putting pressure on the path that relies on closed-source general models, and intensifying competition for autonomous enterprise AI.

The company was registered in Nevada in April 2026, and this round of financing far exceeds that of most early-stage AI startups.

Igor Babuschkin has previously accumulated extensive training and reinforcement learning experience at DeepMind, OpenAI, and xAI. The establishment of River AI focuses on enabling enterprises and individuals to own and train their own models, rather than just renting general models.

The capital path is reflected in the gathering of top VCs, strategic funds from chip manufacturers, and sovereign funds, motivated by the rapid construction of full-stack capabilities from training to deployment, pushing open-source weight models to become the default choice for enterprise AI.

Similar to other core talents from major companies who have left to establish firms focusing on post-training or enterprise customization tools, the current phase is transitioning from reliance on general models to model ownership and customizability.

Essentially, this represents a shift in technology and ownership, where the mechanism is that as the cost and control issues of general models become prominent, rapid low-cost post-training becomes a key path for enterprise differentiation.
