UAE Considers Investing Up to $6.3 Billion to Build AI Data Center in Japan

The UAE is considering investing up to 1 trillion yen (approximately $6.3 billion) to build an artificial intelligence data center in Japan.

The project is led by Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth fund Mubadala and is planned to be located in Akita Prefecture, with a planned capacity of 500 megawatts, potentially becoming one of the largest data centers in Japan and attracting other domestic and foreign investors. The total investment in related projects in the surrounding area could reach 2 trillion yen.

This marks a Gulf sovereign capital move into the Asia-Pacific AI infrastructure, with funds flowing into the construction of data centers supported by renewable energy in northern Japan. The UAE benefits from a diversified AI asset allocation, while local Japanese regions and related suppliers gain large-scale infrastructure and operational opportunities.

Mubadala has previously made large-scale investments in global AI and data center assets through vehicles like MGX, including the acquisition of Aligned Data Centers. This consideration to enter Akita, Japan, continues its strategy of securing computing infrastructure in relatively geopolitically stable markets.

On the capital front, the sovereign fund is leading a 500 megawatt project with up to $6.3 billion, leveraging larger local and supply chain investments. The motivation is to gain advantages from Japan's renewable energy and AI computing rights while diversifying dependence on a single region.

Similar to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf capitals establishing data centers in Asia, this is currently in an accelerated phase of sovereign wealth transitioning from energy to digital infrastructure.

Essentially, this is a concentration of capital: Gulf oil capital is concentrating on global AI computing nodes, with the mechanism being the conversion of energy surpluses into long-term data center assets, securing future computing pricing power.
