OpenAI Hires SpaceX's McCarthy as Global Sales Head

OpenAI has appointed Brian McCarthy as Vice President of Global Sales, marking the first significant appointment by Chief Revenue Officer Dali Rajic, who took office on August 24. This is a newly created position and does not replace any existing personnel. The two will work together to expand the sales team and accelerate corporate and overseas growth. Both parties declined to comment on the details.

McCarthy joined SpaceX in August following the acquisition of Cursor, where he served as President of Global Revenue and Frontline Operations for both companies. He previously managed enterprise sales at Rubrik, ThoughtSpot, AppDynamics, and Qlik. At the same time, Rajic also recruited Mark Fleming, Senior Vice President of Enterprise Sales, and Jaime Patel, Vice President of North American Enterprise Sales Engineering, from Snowflake.

Rajic came from Wiz, which was acquired by Google, where he served as President and Chief Operating Officer, and previously worked in operations and revenue at Zscaler and AppDynamics. He replaces Denise Dresser, who held the position for less than a year. OpenAI officially states that its weekly active users exceed 1 billion, with over 2 million enterprise customers, approximately double that of a year ago. Enterprise adoption has become the main battleground in its competition with Anthropic and is seen as a key revenue source before going public.

As McCarthy and the two from Snowflake join, OpenAI has also entered into a separate multi-year agreement worth approximately $200 million with Snowflake to integrate models into each other's data platforms and intelligent agents, facilitating the deployment of agents on proprietary data for enterprises. The sales structure is shifting from consumer subscriptions to a repeatable enterprise transaction operating system, with overseas markets specifically identified as a direction for acceleration.

Mechanically, this rewrites laboratory growth into corporate quota growth: what is bought is a sales operating system capable of signing global contracts, and what is sold is a story that relies solely on ChatGPT personal subscriptions to boost IPO multiples. Beneficiaries are sales executives with existing large customer networks; those under pressure include laboratories like Anthropic that are also competing for enterprise positions, as well as the Snowflake team that just lost its sales leader. The 2 million enterprise customers refer to account numbers and do not equate to high-value contracts.

Additionally, after Cursor was integrated into SpaceX, its commercial head was quickly transferred to OpenAI, indicating that leading model companies are actively poaching from the same pool of enterprise sales talent. The company has not officially disclosed the length of McCarthy's tenure at SpaceX.

Rajic has appointed a global sales VP and two from Snowflake less than a month into his tenure, indicating a transfer of Wiz's "metrics-driven revenue operating system" to OpenAI. McCarthy's path from enterprise software sales to Cursor, then SpaceX, and now to a model company shows that buyers are looking for frontline machines capable of deploying high-priced seats overseas, not just a list of aerospace clients. Dresser's transition within a year indicates that the evaluation cycle for corporate revenue leaders has been compressed by the IPO timeline.

Capital is shifting from training compute advertising to auditable enterprise annual fees. Doubling the 2 million enterprise customers first addresses the width of the funnel; if half of the revenue is to come from enterprises, seats, APIs, and agent implementations must be made into repeatable quotes. The $200 million model integration with Snowflake embeds sales narratives into the data warehouses customers are already using, reducing friction in "buying another set of tools." Poaching Snowflake's sales means inserting a direct sales pipeline into a partner's channel.

Comparing to Salesforce's early years poaching Oracle sales, Snowflake itself poaching enterprise teams from cloud vendors, and Anthropic locking enterprises with AWS relationships, the industry phase is shifting from product-driven to quota-driven for general model companies. Whoever builds an overseas enterprise sales network first will translate consumer enthusiasm into recurring revenue in the IPO narrative. The talent war is no longer about researchers but about those who can sign contracts that pass security reviews.

The structure belongs to channel reconstruction before capital concentration. Training advantages must be converted into revenue advantages through the enterprise procurement process; the procurement process recognizes familiar sales organizations and interfaces embedded in existing data platforms. The mechanism is: 1 billion weekly active users addresses branding, 2 million enterprise accounts address the door-knocking; the global sales VP addresses making the budget behind the door predictable annual fees. Without this layer, IPO multiples can only hang on chat windows.

  1. For laboratories to go public, they must first install a sales operating system.

  2. Poaching sales from partners is faster than signing another model agreement.

  3. Doubling accounts does not equal doubling contracts; quotas determine valuation language.
