The relationship among the three should be established first. The Times of Israel, or ToI, was not incubated by a conventional newspaper conglomerate. It was built around a distinctive two-pillar founding structure: David Horovitz supplied journalistic capital, editorial judgment, brand identity, and the initial product concept; Seth Klarman supplied startup capital, board-level backing, and patient financial support. ToI currently describes itself as a Jerusalem-based online newspaper founded in 2012 by veteran UK-born Israeli journalist David Horovitz and his US-based “capital partner” Seth Klarman. Horovitz is the founding editor and is responsible for editorial content. The corporate entity is registered in Israel as Zmanei Yisrael.

This was not the classic model of a billionaire buying a newspaper and becoming its de facto editor. At launch in 2012, Horovitz explicitly said Klarman was financing the project while taking no role in editorial operations. Klarman likewise stated publicly that journalistic decisions belonged solely to Horovitz and the newsroom. Klarman signed his launch statement as Chairman of the Board, while Horovitz controlled editorial operations. This capital-editorial firewall is the most important governance feature for understanding ToI.

The founding motivation, however, was not value-neutral. Horovitz wanted an Israel-based, fair-minded publication serving English readers and Jews worldwide, using reporting, analysis, and diverse opinion to help readers understand Israel’s choices. Klarman’s motivation reflected an explicitly pro-Israel worldview. In 2012 he said his interest in Israel had intensified after September 11 amid concerns about terrorism, radical Islam, and what he saw as attempts to delegitimize Israel. It is crucial to distinguish two propositions: Klarman had an ideological motivation for investing; that is not the same as evidence that he dictated individual stories. The available founding documents repeatedly stress that he did not control editorial decisions.

ToI is therefore better understood as the interaction of three layers rather than through a simple left/right label. The first is Horovitz’s professional tradition of English-language Israeli journalism; the second is Klarman’s patient capital and pro-Israel/Jewish philanthropic network; the third is an internet-native model built around free access, real-time news, blogs, opinion, advertising, reader membership, multilingual publishing, and global distribution.

At launch, Horovitz and Klarman were the only investors. Horovitz told the Forward in 2012 that they were the publication’s two investors, while neither disclosed the amount invested. Horovitz said the financial objective was to break even; Klarman said his financing was intended to last until the publication could support itself. Klarman further pledged that his share of any gains would go to charities benefiting citizens of Israel.

The exact ownership percentages, cumulative investment, company valuation, current profitability, and precise stakes of Horovitz and Klarman have not been publicly disclosed. The appropriate conclusion is: public information is limited / cannot currently be confirmed. In 2021, ToI explicitly described Klarman as its “chairman and capital partner.” As of August 2026, the current About page still describes him as its US-based capital partner but does not provide an updated board title. Whether he formally remains Chairman in 2026 therefore cannot currently be confirmed from public information.

From a business-history perspective, Klarman looks less like a growth investor chasing traffic and more like patient capital. ToI did not launch around a rapid financing-round, exit, or IPO narrative. Instead, it gave an experienced editor time to build credibility and a global English-speaking readership before gradually expanding advertising, reader support, publishing partnerships, podcasts, and newsletters. That pattern is highly compatible with Klarman’s own long-term investment philosophy, although there is no basis for claiming that ToI literally copied Baupost’s operating model.

David Horovitz was born in London in 1962 and later became a British-born Israeli journalist. He moved to Israel in 1983, at roughly age 20. Public biographies say he later lived in Jerusalem with his wife, Lisa, and their three children. Reliable public information on his parents’ occupations, household wealth, and detailed childhood economic circumstances is limited, so assigning him to a specific wealth class would be speculative.

His 1983 immigration to Israel was the foundational identity shift in his life. Horovitz was not a locally raised Israeli journalist; he entered Israeli society as a young English-speaking immigrant from London. He has recalled entering The Jerusalem Post environment in 1983 at age 20 while speaking very little Hebrew. That background produced an unusual professional advantage: he could observe Israel from inside while explaining it to the English-speaking world in his native language.

He also served in the Israel Defense Forces’ Education and Youth Corps. Combined with four decades of reporting on Israeli politics, society, war, security, and Jewish identity, this distinguished him from a foreign correspondent temporarily assigned to the Middle East: he became both an observer of Israel and a citizen living inside the society he covered.

Public biographies generally connect his education to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Encyclopedia.com lists Hebrew University and international relations; some Jewish communal biographies call him a Hebrew University graduate. The precise degree designation and graduation year are not consistently documented, so the safest formulation is that he studied international relations at Hebrew University; exact degree details are inconsistently reported / cannot be confirmed with confidence.

The period from 1983 to 1990 formed his journalistic foundation. He worked as a reporter and editor at The Jerusalem Post. This matters because Horovitz did not first become a political pundit and then launch a news site; he was trained inside the reporting and editing machinery of a traditional newspaper before moving into senior editorial management.

During the 1990s he moved into The Jerusalem Report. He spent many years at the English-language news magazine, becoming editor in 1998 and later taking on publishing responsibilities in 2001. The magazine’s emphasis on deeper reporting, international readers, and Israel-Diaspora connections foreshadowed the audience that ToI would later target.

The assassination of Yitzhak Rabin became an important historical context for Horovitz’s intellectual and writing career. After Rabin’s 1995 assassination, Horovitz and the Jerusalem Report team produced Shalom, Friend: The Life and Legacy of Yitzhak Rabin, published in 1996 and winner of a US National Jewish Book Award for nonfiction. Rabin, the Oslo peace process, and Israel’s internal divisions became recurring themes in Horovitz’s understanding of Israeli political life.

His 2000 book A Little Too Close to God reflected a comparatively liberal, pro-peace-process position at that time. Contemporary critical material described him as a liberal who favored the peace process. Rather than writing a purely policy-driven book, however, he mixed everyday experience, identity, insecurity, and politics—a personal-political style that would remain characteristic of his work.

The Second Intifada altered his assessment of security and the peace process. His 2004 book Still Life with Bombers: Israel in the Age of Terrorism focused on life under the threat of suicide bombings and on the political psychology of the Second Intifada. Contemporary reviews treated it both as personal testimony and an analysis of terrorism, the failed peace process, and Israeli political choices. This period helps explain his movement from earlier optimism toward what he later described as Israel’s “confused middle ground.”

From 2004 through 2011 he served as editor-in-chief of The Jerusalem Post. This was his most important professional credential before creating ToI. By then he was no longer simply a reporter: he was responsible for a historic English-language Israeli news institution dealing simultaneously with domestic politics, diplomacy, security, American Jewry, global readers, and the commercial realities of publishing.

After leaving the Jerusalem Post in 2011, he chose entrepreneurship rather than another senior newsroom job. Beginning in late summer 2011, he met web-development firms in Tel Aviv, seeking to translate the editorial hierarchy and judgment of a newspaper into an internet product. Former journalist-turned-web specialist Grig Davidovitz became important to the product logic, while Ronen Mizrachi and Biranit Goren were centrally involved in design and development.

Horovitz was therefore much more than “editor-in-chief” at ToI. He was founder, product definer, brand architect, editorial-system designer, and capital connector. The initial site hierarchy, mix of content, restrained approach to intrusive advertising, opinion marketplace, identity-based commenting, and global Jewish audience strategy were all articulated directly by him at launch.

Choosing Seth Klarman was one of Horovitz’s most consequential decisions. He needed more than a one-off sponsor: he needed a capital provider willing to tolerate early losses while leaving editorial sovereignty with a journalist. Klarman said Horovitz approached him to invest, and Klarman already regarded Horovitz as an important English-language interpreter of Israeli affairs. Their partnership therefore began with trust in editorial credibility rather than purely with a financial spreadsheet.

Horovitz’s principal assets are reputation and media institutions rather than a disclosed portfolio of companies. Unlike Klarman, he does not publicly sit atop a major fund complex. His most important asset is his deep association with The Times of Israel and its editorial institution, supplemented by his books, international media profile, and accumulated credibility within English-speaking Israeli and Jewish public debate.

His external recognition has likewise focused on journalism and the Jewish Diaspora. In 2014 he received a B’nai B’rith World Center lifetime achievement award for journalism; in 1995 he had already been recognized for coverage of the AMIA Jewish community center bombing in Buenos Aires. His professional world has therefore always extended beyond Israeli domestic politics to the Israel-Diaspora relationship.

As of August 2026 he has not withdrawn into a ceremonial founder role. His current ToI author page still lists him as founding editor, and he published political analysis as recently as August 26, 2026. In September 2025 he personally traveled to Damascus to report, reinforcing that his current identity remains “editor + active journalist/commentator.”

His current intellectual position is best understood as a strong concern for Israel’s survival combined with support for democratic institutions, internal debate, and space for journalistic criticism. That is more complicated than a simple left/right description. The trajectory from the Rabin era and hopes around the peace process, through the Second Intifada, and into today’s disputes over war, government, democracy, and global opinion has produced something closer to an Israeli-national-interest, liberal-democratic, security-realist editorial personality. This is an analytical synthesis of his public trajectory rather than a formal political label he uses for himself.

Seth Andrew Klarman was born in New York City in 1957 and grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. Harvard Business School’s official alumni profile says his father was a health economist who taught at Johns Hopkins and NYU, while his mother began as an English teacher and later became a psychiatric social worker. He therefore grew up in an intellectually oriented professional household rather than inheriting a preexisting Wall Street financial dynasty.

His interest in business emerged remarkably early. HBS records family stories of four-year-old Klarman placing price tags on belongings in his room; at ten he began following stock listings and bought his first stock, Johnson & Johnson. As a teenager he delivered the Baltimore Sun, operated snow-removal and lawn-mowing businesses, and developed interests in coins, stamps, horse racing, and baseball. Those details are revealing because valuation, collecting, patience, odds, and risk later became central to his investing personality.

His education was conventional in form but exceptionally strong in pedigree. He studied economics at Cornell University, graduating magna cum laude with a BA, then attended Harvard Business School, where he was a Baker Scholar and earned an MBA in 1982. Baupost’s current official biography still foregrounds both credentials.

His first formative investment job was at Mutual Shares. After Cornell he joined Mutual Shares Corporation in 1979 and worked closely with Max Heine and Michael “Mike” Price, major figures in value investing. Klarman later recalled that the job fit him so well that leaving to attend HBS was not an easy decision.

His intellectual lineage belongs to the Benjamin Graham–David Dodd value-investing tradition. The core idea is not to forecast next quarter’s stock movement but to research underlying business or asset value, buy at a meaningful discount, and retain a margin of safety against error. Klarman later wrote Margin of Safety and contributed editorially to Graham and Dodd’s Security Analysis. Baupost still describes itself as a long-term, value-oriented, multi-strategy investor.

1982 was the decisive year in Klarman’s professional life. Shortly after earning his MBA he helped launch Baupost Group and became its enduring investment leader. Although Baupost’s original capital came from multiple founding families, Klarman became the central architect of its investment philosophy and capital allocation. Baupost currently identifies him as CEO and Portfolio Manager and says he has overseen its investments since inception.

Baupost is Klarman’s true core commercial asset and wealth engine. It is not a media holding company but a Boston-based private investment manager investing for families, foundations, endowments, and other long-term institutions. Klarman’s wealth, financial reputation, network, and capacity to fund other long-duration projects ultimately rest on Baupost’s success.

On August 27, 2026, Forbes’ real-time page estimated Klarman’s net worth at roughly $1.5 billion. The same profile refers to Baupost having $27.4 billion under management, but that AUM figure dates to March 2023 rather than 2026. Baupost is private and does not continuously publish full current AUM on its website, so its precise 2026 AUM is reported inconsistently / cannot currently be confirmed. Public 13F equity holdings should not be confused with Baupost’s total assets under management.

The 1991 publication of Margin of Safety became Klarman’s most important intellectual influence asset. Rather than remaining an ordinary investment bestseller, the out-of-print book acquired cult status among value investors. HBS has long treated it as representative of Klarman’s investment thinking, while Baupost itself continues to cite it as the articulation of his risk-conscious value philosophy.

The Klarman Family Foundation is his second major institutional platform. HBS’s timeline dates its creation to 1990. Its philanthropy has encompassed medicine, education, Jewish institutions, democracy, and Israeli social issues. Today it explicitly supports Arab Israeli employment and education, framing its goal as a strong Jewish and democratic state in which Arab citizens can participate more fully in education, leadership, employment, and economic growth.

His philanthropic network gives him influence far beyond finance. In July 2025, Klarman was selected to chair the Broad Institute’s Board of Directors, succeeding Eric Schmidt; he had served on the board since its creation in 2009. That places him at the intersection of investment capital, life sciences, Harvard/MIT networks, and large-scale philanthropy.

His political identity cannot accurately be reduced to “right-wing billionaire.” His earlier US political giving often favored Republicans, but Reuters documented donations to Democrats as well. In 2016 he publicly opposed Donald Trump and supported Hillary Clinton, declaring Trump unqualified for the presidency. At the same time, Klarman has maintained a clearly pro-Israel orientation and has funded Jewish and pro-Israel organizations. A better description is a pro-Israel, institutionalist, value-investing American elite figure with cross-party giving and strong opposition to Trump.

Klarman’s relationship with ToI is therefore one component of a much larger influence network, not his principal source of wealth. Baupost is his financial asset; the Klarman Family Foundation is a philanthropic vehicle; Broad, HBS, and organizations such as Facing History are institutional influence networks; Margin of Safety is an intellectual-reputation asset; and ToI is a media influence asset capable of turning capital into an English-language information infrastructure about Israel. Klarman even pledged to donate his own share of ToI gains.

ToI’s original product ambition was not to reproduce print journalism online but to build an “Internet-era Israeli newspaper.” From the start, Horovitz envisioned breaking news, original reporting, opinion and blogs, Hebrew and Arabic media reviews, Jewish-world coverage, technology, culture, travel, and lifestyle, rather than reducing Israel coverage to diplomacy, war, and security. Klarman used the “Internet era” formulation explicitly at launch.

Horovitz placed particular emphasis on a “marketplace of ideas.” Ops & Blogs was designed as a large-scale opinion marketplace extending far beyond the newsroom’s own ideological range. At the same time, he initially insisted on identified rather than anonymous commenters in an effort to reduce the toxicity of anonymous internet debate. That openness increased ToI’s reach but later produced some of its most serious moderation risks.

The main site gradually developed into a collection of vertical brands. As of 2026 its principal sections include Israel & the Region, Jewish Times, Israel Inside, Tech Israel, Real Estate Israel, The Blogs, podcasts, video, and multiple newsletters. It is therefore no longer merely a political-news site but a broader digital-media system organized around Israel and the Jewish world.

Multilingual expansion began in 2014. ToI first launched an Arabic edition in February 2014, seeking to give Arabic readers direct access to Israeli news and perspectives. Roughly two weeks later it launched a French edition targeting readers in France, Israel, and the wider Francophone Jewish community. The French site was designed around translated English material supplemented by original content.

A Persian edition followed in 2015. It was positioned as a window for Persian-speaking readers into Israel’s complex reality while also covering developments inside Iran. That move illustrates ToI’s geopolitical media logic: it attempted not only to expand among English-speaking Jews but also to enter strategically important regional language markets.

In 2019 ToI moved in the opposite linguistic direction by entering Israel’s Hebrew domestic market with Zman Yisrael. Unlike Arabic, French, or Persian translation-led expansion, Hebrew meant entering the highly competitive Israeli domestic news market. Zman Yisrael therefore marked a shift from merely “explaining Israel in English” toward directly participating in Israeli digital journalism.

The multilingual strategy has involved contraction as well as expansion. On April 7, 2026, ToI closed its Arabic and Persian sites. The company said those sites primarily translated English material and that modern online translation had reduced the need for separate translation-heavy operations; it chose to concentrate resources on globally resonant original English journalism. The French site and Hebrew sister site Zman Yisrael remained in operation.

That decision reveals ToI’s current strategic priorities. Original English journalism has become the global core asset; Hebrew offers independent domestic-market value; French addresses a substantial differentiated audience; translation-heavy Arabic and Persian became less economically distinctive as online translation improved. The final clause is a business inference drawn from the company’s explanation rather than disclosed financial data.

Publisher partnerships represent another form of asset-light expansion. The current site links to partners including Atlanta Jewish Times, New Jersey’s Jewish Standard, Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle, the UK’s Jewish News, and Australian Jewish News. Rather than employing every local Jewish-community reporter itself, ToI uses technology, content relationships, and brand integration to form a transnational local-news network.

In 2019 ToI said its blogging platform hosted roughly 9,000 bloggers and that it partnered with seven Jewish newspapers around the world. Blogs and partnerships were therefore not decorative features; they were important network mechanisms. A newsroom far smaller than a global wire service could extend its reach into many Jewish communities through contributors and publishing partners.

Its digital assets now also include apps, newsletters, podcasts, video, and social distribution. The current official advertising page claims roughly 230,000 subscribers for the Daily Edition newsletter, more than one million monthly podcast listeners available to advertisers, and more than 1.4 million social-media followers. These are company marketing figures and should not be treated as independently audited circulation statistics.

The same advertising page currently claims more than eight million monthly users, roughly 25 million monthly visits, and 75 million monthly pageviews. The figures demonstrate meaningful global scale for an Israel-focused English digital outlet, although they remain sales and marketing metrics published by the company.

Its global traffic exploded after the October 7, 2023 attacks and subsequent war. According to Similarweb data reported by Press Gazette and relayed by ToI, the site recorded about 64.2 million visits in October 2023, up 604% year on year, entering the global top 50 news sites for the first time. In November it recorded 56.3 million visits, up 429% year on year, making it the fastest-growing major global news site for a second consecutive month.

That surge reveals ToI’s most important competitive advantage: during a major Israeli crisis, it has become one of the infrastructures through which global English-speaking audiences can access an Israel-based perspective directly. Unlike an international outlet that must rapidly assemble an interpretive framework during a crisis, ToI has long-established local reporters, editors, military and political coverage, and Israeli social networks.

The launch-era business model can be summarized as shareholder capital from Klarman/Horovitz plus free content plus advertising. Horovitz discussed advertising at launch, emphasizing the avoidance of disruptive pop-ups and thanking advertisers and organizations already partnering with the site. Advertising was therefore part of the original product economics rather than a later addition.

Internet advertising alone, however, did not solve the economics of expensive original journalism. When launching the ToI Community in 2019, Horovitz explicitly noted that internet-page advertising generates far less revenue than traditional print advertising, while the publication was simultaneously increasing spending on reporters, editors, investigations, and original journalism.

That made 2019 the second major business-model turning point: the launch of the Community membership system. ToI did not adopt a conventional hard paywall. All readers could continue accessing its journalism, while dedicated readers were invited to contribute from $6 a month. Members received benefits including an ad-free experience and some exclusive content. The logic was not “pay or you cannot read,” but “keep information publicly accessible while high-loyalty readers help subsidize its production.”

The result is a hybrid digital-news revenue model. Publicly identifiable revenue mechanisms include on-site advertising, newsletter promotions, podcast audio advertising, social-media promotion, and Community reader support, with founder capital serving as an early financial cushion. The relative proportions of these sources, annual revenue, EBITDA, net profit, and cash flow are not publicly disclosed / cannot currently be confirmed.

ToI did not choose a pure “maximize clicks at all costs” advertising model. Horovitz treated credibility and fair-minded journalism as product value from the beginning and tried to limit highly intrusive advertising. Once reader membership became part of the model, reputation itself became monetizable: voluntary recurring support only works when users believe the publication has durable public value.

Klarman’s capital was especially important during the transition period. The most dangerous phase for a news startup is often when readership is growing but advertising and membership revenue are still insufficient to pay for a professional newsroom. The Forward reported in 2012 that Klarman had structured his financing to allow ToI to survive until it could support itself. That is a classic form of patient capital.

Klarman’s involvement also creates an unavoidable governance question: can a billionaire with explicit political and Israel-related views influence editorial framing? The founders’ institutional answer was to assign editorial authority entirely to Horovitz. The fact that both men repeatedly emphasized that firewall demonstrates that they understood ownership independence would be a central credibility issue.

Klarman’s broader pro-Israel organizational network intensifies that structural question. The Forward reported that his foundation gave roughly $4 million to The Israel Project from 2008 through 2010 and also supported MEMRI, CAMERA, and related organizations; Haaretz later reported more than $1.5 million in cumulative Klarman Family Foundation support for CAMERA. At the same time, Klarman has publicly opposed expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, illustrating why he cannot simply be categorized as part of the Israeli political right.

The most accurate conclusion is therefore neither “Klarman controls ToI” nor “his ideology is irrelevant.” The first assertion lacks public evidence; the second ignores his stated motivations and philanthropic network. A more precise description is: ToI is a privately backed publication supported by a capital partner with an explicit pro-Israel public worldview, while day-to-day editorial authority has institutionally been assigned to professional journalist David Horovitz.

Rejecting a hard paywall was another crucial strategic decision. For a publication whose mission includes explaining Israel globally, a paywall could increase revenue per subscriber but reduce reach during wars and political crises. ToI instead sacrifices some subscription certainty in exchange for maximum distribution, monetizing loyalty and scale through reader support, advertising, newsletters, podcasts, and related channels. That model has remained in place since 2019.

The 2014–2019 multilingual expansion was another large strategic wager; the 2026 language contraction was a pragmatic correction. ToI initially assumed that important languages merited standalone editions. As machine translation improved, it reassessed the return on translation-led assets and redirected resources toward original English reporting. This demonstrates that ToI is willing to close legacy products when their economics or strategic value changes.

Zman Yisrael represents the opposite case: not translation, but deeper market entry. The implication is that ToI is more willing to sustain language products that either produce distinct original journalism or serve a sufficiently differentiated and strategically valuable audience.

ToI’s greatest achievement is not that it invented digital news, but that it identified and served a longstanding global market that was never fully satisfied: people who want direct access to Israel-based reporting but primarily read in English. That audience spans the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Europe, the Jewish Diaspora, and non-Jewish readers following the Middle East. Horovitz’s English-language journalistic credibility and Klarman’s American Jewish capital network were unusually complementary for this market.

It also broadened the product definition of “Israel news.” Horovitz explicitly argued at launch that the publication should not be dominated exclusively by politics, diplomacy, and security, but should prominently cover technology, culture, daily life, personalities, and Jewish communities worldwide. ToI thus became both a political-news organization and a kind of interpreter of Israeli society and global Jewish public life.

A third achievement was turning an open contributor network into a scale advantage. Thousands of bloggers, local publishing partners, opinion contributors, and community writers allowed a newsroom smaller than the largest global agencies to cover a far wider range of communities and arguments. The roughly 9,000 bloggers claimed in 2019 illustrate that network effect.

The open platform also produced one of ToI’s most notorious content failures. In August 2014 an external blogger published a post titled “When genocide is permissible.” ToI removed the post, discontinued the writer’s blog, publicly called it a blatant violation of editorial guidelines, and said it would not tolerate posts inciting violence or criminal acts.

The structural lesson was larger than the individual article. ToI acknowledged that its blogging system allowed approved bloggers to publish their own material. That architecture dramatically reduced the cost of creating a broad community marketplace but replaced traditional pre-publication newsroom review with much greater reputational risk. The same mechanism that enabled rapid growth of the “marketplace of ideas” also created its most dangerous moderation boundary.

A different verification problem appeared in 2020. Reuters investigated an apparently fabricated writer called “Oliver Taylor,” whose profile photograph was suspected of being AI-generated and whose pieces had appeared at multiple Israeli/Jewish outlets. After Reuters began asking questions, ToI removed his work; Opinion Editor Miriam Herschlag said she rejected his protests after he failed to establish his identity. The episode was not unique to ToI, but it exposed the vulnerability of open opinion and contributor systems to identity fraud and influence operations.

The enduring controversy remains the tension between pro-Israel capital and independent journalism. Klarman partly understood the project as a response to what he considered unfair or incomplete coverage of Israel, and he has financed organizations such as CAMERA and The Israel Project. Critics therefore have legitimate reason to scrutinize whether ToI operates within a structurally pro-Israel frame. On the other hand, Horovitz and Klarman publicly established an editorial firewall from day one, and the sources examined here provide no concrete evidence that Klarman has issued instructions on individual stories.

Assessing ToI therefore requires separating standpoint from party control. It is plainly an Israel-based publication intensely focused on the Jewish world, which shapes its agenda and cultural frame. Yet it publicly states that it has no partisan political affiliation and publishes a broad range of opinion. Treating “Israeli perspective” as automatically equivalent to propaganda for a particular Israeli party is not supported by the available evidence.

Horovitz’s principal controversies are likewise matters of politics and editorial judgment rather than a major personal business or criminal scandal.
