Lin won a seat in the 1975 supplementary Legislative Yuan election while prominent tangwai opposition figure Kuo Yu-hsin lost. Lin died on November 28, 2015, from cardiopulmonary failure associated with a tumor, at age 76. Forbes estimated his fortune that year at approximately US$4.1 billion. The family's wealth and businesses subsequently passed into an ownership and management structure involving his widow Lin Chang Su-O and the next generation.
