Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin stated: only giving up means death; he will not give up on privacy and will double down on it. This statement counters a popular narrative that on-chain transparency, regulatory tracking, and cloud models have ended privacy.

This year, he reiterated the same stance in his roadmap. In January, he stated that by 2026, he aims to reclaim the lost ground of self-sovereignty and trustlessness, asserting that private transactions in wallets should be as usable as public transactions. In May, he outlined three immediate steps: account abstraction with FOCIL to prevent privacy transactions from being discarded by builders in public memory pools; using nonce with keys to sever sequence number associations; and tools like Kohaku to reduce wallets exposing IPs and addresses to third-party RPCs. In August, the Strawmap outlined a focus on strong privacy and quantum resistance, marking privacy pools and "wormhole" transfers as key points until 2029. In September, he proposed a recursive STARK memory pool, aiming to reduce the gas costs of privacy transactions and quantum-resistant signatures from hundreds of thousands or even millions to tens of thousands.

The accompanying narrative suggests that defense may still have the upper hand. He opposes the notion that "AI hackers will make cybersecurity doomed," stating that formal verification, once able to prove the safety of entire programs, means that holders—including himself, who claims about 90% of his net worth is in crypto—are betting that defenses will keep up. He emphasized that local models running on laptops should prioritize both speed and not exposing private keys to the model. The foundation has shrunk to emphasize anti-censorship, open-source, privacy, and security, prioritizing refuge technologies over imitating Apple and Google.

Who is buying and who is selling: buyers are those who believe default privacy has not yet been written into the mainnet, while sellers are those who view "transparency equals compliance, tracking equals civilization" as the settlement layer. The event is driven by stance posts, with funds flowing towards zero-knowledge proofs, privacy pools, and local inference, rather than more analytical company nodes. Beneficiaries are protocols and wallets that still maintain default hiding, while those under pressure are companies relying on traceable ledgers for risk control products. Giving up is a social judgment, while doubling down is an engineering schedule.
