The total gold reserves amount to 612.4 tons, valued at 72.2 billion euros by the end of 2025, with this transfer accounting for over a quarter of the local original holdings.

The physical path involves over 27 tons of gold bars being transported from North America to the cash center in Zeist near Utrecht, with an equivalent amount then shipped from Zeist to the Bank of England to avoid melting. The remaining approximately 59 tons will be sold in New York and repurchased in London as gold that meets international delivery standards. After the transfer, London's share increased from 18.1% to 32.1%, becoming the primary storage location; Zeist remains at 30.8%; while New York and Ottawa each decreased to 18.5%. President Olaf Sleijpen stated that this enhances tradability, is expected to never be utilized, but resilience must still be strengthened. The gold bars at the Bank of England must meet modern trading standards and are regarded as the most easily tradable and readily available reserves in times of crisis; the reserves in New York and Ottawa cannot be accessed as quickly. The action was made public only after completion for reasons of safety and public interest. France previously handled approximately 129 tons of gold from the New York Federal Reserve between July 2025 and January 2026 and repurchased it in Paris. Bloomberg reported that this transfer corresponds to a value of approximately $12 billion.

Who is buying and who is selling: The driving factors are the storage locations and delivery standards, not a reduction in Dutch holdings. The buyers are central banks that need to pledge or liquidate in the London market at any time, while the sellers are the custodial shares from the New York and Ottawa vaults. The beneficiaries are the London clearing and delivery standard, while the default status of New York as the official gold custody center is under pressure. Funds are swapped between gold bars in the two locations, with the total remaining unchanged, and the liquidity premium shifting from North American vaults to the Bank of England.
