The structural weakness of the Philippine peso has long stemmed from dependence on energy imports, current account pressures, and global dollar liquidity cycles. In 2018 and 2022, rising oil prices and Federal Reserve tightening pushed the peso weaker; in 2022, the peso briefly fell below 59 to 1 USD, prompting the Philippine central bank to respond with interest rate hikes and market interventions. The current drop to around 62 indicates that external energy shocks and dollar financing costs have once again outweighed the foreign exchange inflows from remittances and service exports.

From a capital perspective, rising international oil prices will first increase the dollar procurement volume of Philippine refining, power generation, aviation, and transportation companies, leading banks and importers to buy dollars in the spot and forward markets; as dollar demand increases, the depreciation of the peso raises the local currency costs of foreign debt principal, interest, and imported goods. Meanwhile, remittances from overseas Filipino workers converted into more pesos can buffer household income pressures, but cannot fully offset the inflation transmitted through energy prices affecting transportation, food, and electricity.

Historical comparisons include the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the 2022 emerging market currency pressure cycle. Both indicate that when the dollar strengthens, refinancing costs for foreign debt rise, and import price shocks occur simultaneously, exchange rate depreciation reinforces expectations of inflation and capital outflows. Unlike economies with high foreign debt and fixed exchange rates, the Philippines has a floating exchange rate, remittances, and BPO dollar income buffers, but these buffers can only slow the impact and cannot eliminate the foreign exchange gap caused by rising commodity bills.

Essentially, this is about the transfer of pricing power. International oil prices are priced in dollars, while domestic consumers in the Philippines pay for fuel, electricity, freight, and food prices in pesos; when the peso weakens, overseas energy producers, dollar asset holders, and local foreign exchange earners gain relative pricing advantages, while import-dependent businesses and households with local currency income bear the costs. The exchange rate is not merely a financial indicator, but a conduit connecting global energy prices with domestic living costs.
