Former Founders Fund partner Brian Singerman introduced his new firm GPx on Jack Altman's podcast, stating its goal is to support top emerging fund managers and seek investors who may outperform themselves at their peak.

Singerman worked at Founders Fund for many years, participating in investment discussions for companies like Anduril and Airbnb. The podcast indicates that he is no longer engaged in traditional venture capital partnerships, instead directing capital and judgment towards a new generation of GPs, which includes those establishing new funds, investing independently, or developing unique deal sources.

He opposes using fixed lists to screen founders, emphasizing the search for "spikes," or characteristics of founders who significantly exceed the norm in certain abilities. This approach prioritizes identifying non-average talent rather than seeking entrepreneurs who fit templates based on resumes, education, industry experience, and team completeness; in early investments where extreme results dominate returns, standardized screening can easily miss high-variance individuals who do not conform to conventional profiles.

Singerman attributes Founders Fund's success to concentrated investments and leveraging the firm's own strengths. The podcast mentions that Founders Fund's returns on Airbnb are second only to its investment in Facebook; this indicates that top fund returns are often not accumulated from a large number of average projects, but rather determined by a few long-held, sustainably additive projects with significant exit potential.

He believes the SPV model has become ineffective. SPVs are typically set up by managers around a single project to pool external funds for that transaction; when market liquidity is ample and popular projects are frequently financed, SPVs allow more investors to gain shares, but in an environment of excess capital where quality projects prioritize long-term support and shareholder quality, temporary funding vehicles struggle to replace the brand, post-investment capabilities, and certainty of long-term funds. The core structure of GPx is an incentive mechanism that requires managers to "bet their careers" by taking on long-term funds, clear ownership responsibilities, and personal reputations, thus bearing ongoing consequences for investment decisions. This model does not merely assess whether a project can enter a hot funding round, but evaluates whether managers can establish deal sourcing, screening capabilities, post-investment support, position management, and a complete system for continuously explaining capital allocation to LPs.

In market mechanics, LPs are the buyers of venture capital fund shares, while GPs are the sellers of capital allocation capabilities and project access; GPx supports emerging GPs with capital, who then bet on founding companies. If GPx identifies managers with unique deal sources and concentrated holding discipline, funds will flow through new funds to early high-growth companies; mature large funds, intermediaries relying on SPV arbitrage, and undifferentiated project distribution channels will face pressure. The true scarcity is not the capital itself, but the managers who can secure quality projects, make concentrated judgments, and hold long-term in an environment of excess capital.
