Elon Musk reflected on how he uses time after the company grew in the Cheeky Pint podcast. He stated that the number of hours in a day is fixed, and as the business expands, the founder's time is inevitably diluted, making it impossible to oversee everything. He focuses daily on the one factor that restricts the entire company.

His allocation method is the opposite of average effort. He demands to let go of the smoothly operating parts. His energy is directed only at the current limiting factor, helping the team to address that point. Regarding Starship, he identified the remaining major bottleneck as the heat shield: the ship can land in the ocean, but tiles may fall off during the process. The goal is reliable daily flights, but checking 40,000 tiles one by one is impractical. He described this as a sense of 'mad urgency' and stated that this urgency would be projected throughout the company.

Deadlines are intentionally set at a 50% confidence level. He seeks the most aggressive deadlines that he can think of, still having a 50% probability of completion, rather than impossible deadlines. As a result, half of the timelines will be late. This is by design. His reasoning is that project timelines will expand like gas, filling the time given, so it is necessary to give less. Extreme deadlines are used to expose unachievable parts early.

Route overturns are calculated as a pain that the founder must bear. John Collison pointed out in the program that the switch from carbon fiber to stainless steel for Starship was pushed by Musk, not something the team arrived at on their own. Musk described the cause as a dead end: carbon fiber is expensive, and the cost will still approach material prices after mass production. He later wrote publicly about this, thus changing Starship to stainless steel and then creating his own new alloy, no longer using 301. At the time, the team was defending the slow old plan, and he demanded to clear this sunk cost on the spot.

Personnel rules are also outlined in the same reflection. He hires for traits that cannot be taught: talent, drive, trustworthiness, and ambition; industry knowledge can be supplemented later. Many early employees at SpaceX had no aerospace background. Resumes can look good but lack substance. His line is to talk for 20 minutes; if the conversation does not feel unusual, he trusts the dialogue over the paper, focusing on a few specific examples of independent problem-solving without a given path. Engineering reviews occur once or twice a week. He uses cross-level questioning and asks around the room to avoid anyone rehearsing in advance or only reporting favorably to him, while mentally tracking each person's progress to see if it is converging.

This is not about equity or orders. The investment is the founder's fixed hours, and the recipients are the engineering teams stuck on a single bottleneck. The driving force is the lack of time after the company has expanded. The beneficiaries are the currently selected limiting processes and the groups willing to expose failures within the 50% deadline. The pressure is on the already smooth operations that no longer receive his time, as well as the old plans that cling to carbon fiber and sunk costs. Being busy does not constitute progress.
