The U.S. Mint has launched the 2026 250th Anniversary Donald J. Trump Presidential $1 coin, featuring the current president's portrait on the obverse, inscribed with LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 1776–2026, designed by Chief Engraver Joseph Menna based on an official photo by White House photographer Daniel Torok.

The reverse features the presidential seal design by the late Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro: an eagle clutching an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, a shield on its chest, and a ribbon with E PLURIBUS UNUM, with the shield engraved with 250. The coin is made of an alloy of 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, and 2% nickel, has a gold appearance without containing gold, weighs 8.10 grams, and has a diameter of 26.49 millimeters, with a smooth edge and no mint mark, produced only at the Philadelphia Mint.

The coin uses circulating coin surface technology but is not intended for circulation, remaining legal tender. A roll of 25 coins is sold for $61, approximately $2.44 each; a bag of 100 coins is sold for $154.50, approximately $1.55 each. The product limits are 150,000 rolls and 50,000 bags, totaling 8.75 million coins when sold out. Each household is limited to 2 purchases, with the limit lasting until 2 PM EST on September 3.

Additionally, 250,000 coins will have a JULY 4th privy mark struck in Philadelphia on July 4, mixed randomly into rolls and bags, not sold separately. The authorization is based on 31 U.S.C. §5112 and the 2020 Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act, allowing the Secretary of the Treasury to issue a $1 coin symbolizing the 250th anniversary of the nation in 2026. Since 1866, the federal government has long prohibited living portraits on currency, making this the first representation of a living person on U.S. currency in about a century and a half.

The design was approved by the Fine Arts Commission this year, with members appointed by the current president. The president himself stated that having his portrait minted on a coin is "very unusual" but feels honored, and has also suggested a $250 bill concept. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated it aims to commemorate the legacy of freedom; Mint Director Paul Hollis said the design covers the nation's past, present, and future. At the G20 venue in North Carolina, Treasury personnel have distributed samples to foreign counterparts. After the official sale began, there was a virtual queue, with wait times rising from about 20 minutes to about 1 hour.

In market mechanics, buyers are collectors and secondary market speculators, while the seller is the U.S. Mint. The driving force is the commemorative narrative combined with the rarity of a living president's portrait, rather than circulation demand. Funds flow from retail accounts into the Treasury's coin product revenue: the $1 coin is sold for $1.55 to $2.44, with the minting tax coming from the premium rather than the metal value. Beneficiaries are the Mint and collectors holding privy-marked coins, while those under pressure are holders using the coin at face value and late buyers who purchase the legal tender as a commemorative piece at a premium. The registered 24K one-ounce gold proof coin has not yet been priced for sale, which will elevate the same portrait from copper alloy to precious metal.
