Citadel Takes Over Most of Situational Awareness's Stock Portfolio

Ken Griffin's Citadel has purchased most of the publicly traded stock portfolio of Leopold Aschenbrenner's Situational Awareness.

The fund has suffered significant losses due to heavy investments in AI-related stocks during a recent market crash and is facing margin calls, with its asset size dropping from over $20 billion to about $10 billion, while retaining private positions in companies like Anthropic.

This news has sparked heated discussions in the community, focusing on conspiracy theories regarding Citadel's actions against AI stock guru Leopold Aschenbrenner.

Public information indicates that Citadel has recently been vocally promoting the Federal Reserve's interest rate hike narrative, creating tension in the market, which, combined with previous excessive market gains, ultimately led to the market crash. This crash triggered margin calls for Situational Awareness. However, the Federal Reserve did not actually raise interest rates.

Event-driven funds have exited high-leverage AI-themed positions, with large hedge funds like Citadel absorbing the sell-off. Related AI infrastructure stocks faced short-term pressure before rebounding.

Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher, gained fame in 2024 with his paper "Situational Awareness" and subsequently founded the eponymous fund, initially receiving seed funding from Jane Street, Stripe founders, and others. The fund achieved a 439% return in the first half of the year, rapidly expanding its assets to over $20 billion, becoming a barometer for AI-themed trading.

In terms of capital strategy, the fund employed about 4x leverage betting on AI infrastructure stocks. After margin calls from prime brokers including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Bank of America, it was forced to package and sell its public portfolio to Citadel, concentrating funds and positions from high-leverage thematic funds to large multi-strategy platforms, while retaining its private position in Anthropic (valued at about $5 billion).

Similar cases can be seen with the 2021 Archegos collapse, where high-leverage concentrated positions were absorbed by large institutions, as well as previous forced liquidations of several thematic funds during crowded trade reversals; currently, AI hedge funds are transitioning from narrative-driven high-leverage expansion to deleveraging and private asset transformation.

This essentially represents capital concentration: high-leverage thematic funds are forcibly cleared during volatility, with the mechanism being prime broker risk control and the liquidity advantage of large institutions, accelerating the transfer of funds to platforms with balance sheet and absorption capacity.
