Cornell University Provost Kavita Bala released the report "The Future of American Universities," confronting a fundamental question: Is a university education still worth it? The report was completed by a committee of 18 professors over one year, consulting over 6,000 faculty, students, alumni, government officials, and external advisors. The committee's answer is "worth it," but only if universities redefine and update their missions.

The report identifies AI as the primary impact. AI can "create the appearance of learning without fostering meaningful thought"; its generated assignments have reached the level of college graduates, rendering traditional assessment methods ineffective. The report also notes that many students internally reject AI but worry that they will fall behind if they do not use it, forcing them to comply. MIT previously issued a similar warning: AI can reliably complete most written assessments in undergraduate courses, and many courses need significant redesign to "survive encounters with AI."

A study led by Cornell provides quantitative evidence. The research covered over 95,000 students from 20 public research universities: 37% use generative AI at least once a month, with 62% among computer science students and 24% among arts students; 9% of students admitted to cheating with AI, with a cheating rate of 26% among daily users and 7% among monthly users. Study leader Kizilcec pointed out that the misuse of AI is damaging the credibility of university diplomas, and assessment reform is "necessary and urgent."

Trust and cost pressures are worsening simultaneously. The report cites Gallup data: public confidence in higher education has dropped from 57% in 2015 to 38% in 2026, yet 83% still recognize the role of universities in economic growth. Tuition increases have outpaced inflation for decades, and students are highly sensitive to the cost of attendance, forced to carefully choose majors and compete for internships to ensure returns. In the next decade, the "demographic cliff" will significantly reduce the traditional college-age population, impacting enrollment models.

Federal relations and employment are also under pressure. The report states that federal research funding is contracting, and the path to restoring it is unclear; legislative pressures on research independence are intensifying, posing challenges to academic freedom not seen in generations. Employers generally report that graduates lack three key skills: dealing with uncertainty, solving ambiguous problems, and accepting criticism while recovering from setbacks and collaborating across positions.

In market mechanisms, buyers are the students and families paying tuition, as well as employers purchasing diplomas; sellers are universities offering degrees as core products. AI has driven the production cost of assignments and papers close to zero, diluting the value of degrees as proof of capability, leading employers to shift towards skills testing and internship evaluations. Funding is moving from traditional degree premiums to AI tool providers, educational technology platforms, and various skills certifications. Beneficiaries are tech companies providing educational AI products and top universities capable of rebuilding assessment systems; those under pressure are mid-tier institutions reliant on tuition and lacking brand premiums, as well as ordinary students facing declining degree returns.

Cornell has already begun to take action. The report proposes five commitments: a human-centered AI approach and rigorous critical thinking, a two-way connection with the public, innovation and resilience in research, rebuilding academic citizenship, and integrating learning ecosystems. The university has established the position of Vice Provost for AI Strategy, filled by Thorsten Joachims, and is building a unified campus AI platform, requiring students to complete AI training and sign a commitment before use. First-year undergraduates must take a mandatory course on critical AI literacy. Due to high error rates, the university will no longer rely on AI detection software to handle academic integrity cases. Strategic planning to implement the report will be announced in the coming weeks. The research also found disparities in usage: the proportion of female students frequently using AI is 33%, while male students is 45%; minority students at 29%, and white and Asian students at 39%.
