Federal Reserve officials say rate hikes may be needed if inflation does not decrease

Multiple Federal Reserve officials stated that if inflation continues to remain above target, further tightening of monetary policy may still be necessary; this statement reinforces the internal divisions within the Fed regarding maintaining high interest rates or even raising rates again.

At the July meeting, the Fed kept the federal funds rate at 3.50% to 3.75%, but three officials—Lorie Logan, Beth Hammack, and Neel Kashkari—voted in favor of a 25 basis point rate hike, indicating that the hawkish stance has shifted from individual remarks to formal policy dissent.

In July, the U.S. inflation rate fell to 3.4%, down 0.1 percentage points from June, but still significantly above the Fed's 2% target; market focus has shifted from short-term inflation declines to whether price pressures can sustainably return to the target range.

A Reuters survey conducted from August 12 to 17 among 104 economists showed that 94 expect the Fed to keep rates unchanged at the September 15-16 meeting; the median forecast in the survey expects PCE inflation to average 3.5% this year and not return to the Fed's target range until at least 2028.

Interest rate futures pricing has lowered expectations for a September rate hike: CME FedWatch shows that the market estimates the probability of a 25 basis point hike in September at about 34%, down from around 60% three weeks ago; maintaining rates is now the baseline scenario.

In market mechanisms, buyers are betting on falling inflation and peak interest rates, while sellers are buying protection for a rate hike scenario through interest rate derivatives and long positions in the dollar. Event-driven factors stem from Fed minutes and hawkish dissent; if future CPI, PCE, or wage data rises again, funds may flow out of long-duration tech stocks and long bonds into the dollar, short-term treasuries, floating rate assets, and inflation-sensitive sectors like energy.
