Report Says Firefighters and Pilots Are Hardest to Replace with AI, Human Value Increases in Chaotic Environments

Resume Now's ranking based on the U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET occupational ability data shows that firefighters, airline pilots, and tree trimmers are the least likely professions to be replaced by AI.

Firefighters rank first, with core requirements including physical strength, endurance, quick response, spatial judgment, and risk identification in continuously changing hazardous environments; the median annual salary for this profession in the U.S. is $59,280.

Airline pilots, co-pilots, and flight engineers rank second, relying on navigation, multitasking, risk identification, and critical decision-making; their median annual salary is $232,140, the highest on the list.

Tree trimmers and pruners rank fourth, involving high-altitude work, heavy equipment, outdoor weather, and immediate safety judgment; their median annual salary is $50,960.

Other professions in the top ten include modular building installers, structural steel workers, oil and gas drill operators, mine roof bolt workers, commercial pilots, fish and game workers, and loggers. The ranking measures the difficulty of automation and does not imply that these positions will not use AI tools.

The report scores based on O*NET's indicators such as static strength, endurance, reaction time, spatial orientation, time allocation, and problem sensitivity. These abilities require completing a "perception-judgment-execution" loop in unstructured physical environments, which is currently difficult to replace independently with pure software models.

In market mechanisms, generative AI primarily replaces information processing tasks that are digitizable, standardizable, and have low liability costs; the value of the aforementioned professions lies in on-site physical execution, extreme situation judgment, and accident liability. AI is more likely to first enter scheduling, predictive maintenance, risk warning, flight planning, and on-site information support rather than directly eliminating certified personnel; the beneficiaries are employers and professionals who can enhance output per work hour with AI, while repetitive administrative, documentation, and basic analysis tasks face pressure.
