Sequoia Capital Managing Partner Alfred Lin pointed out that early founders often misjudge two things: first, treating culture as a replaceable element, and second, building teams to their own comfort level.

His assessment is that culture may seem like empty talk when a company is very small, but once it starts raising funds or expanding, culture will determine who can be hired, what funds can be raised, and how decisions are replicated.

The second point is the hiring standard: the team should be strong enough to make the founder slightly uncomfortable, as this means the founder must elevate their own capabilities to keep up with the team; if everyone in the room makes you feel comfortable, it indicates that the standards have been locked by the comfort zone.

Lin himself is not just discussing theory. He worked with Tony Hsieh at Zappos, serving as COO, CFO, and Chairman, helping the company achieve its first full-year profit in 2006, and was involved until its acquisition by Amazon for about $1.2 billion in 2009.

After joining Sequoia in 2010, he led or was deeply involved in early investments in consumer and local lifestyle companies like Airbnb and DoorDash, and joined their boards; starting November 2025, he will co-lead Sequoia with Pat Grady.

In market mechanisms, the buyers are early venture capital and subsequent growth funds, while the sellers are founders giving up equity; this is a typical event-driven selection, where capital flows to teams that can clearly articulate and deliver on "culture execution and high talent density." The beneficiaries are founders and early shareholders who can continuously elevate the pricing for the next round, while the pressured ones are projects that treat culture as a poster and hiring as filling gaps, which will be systematically eliminated by the same institutions after Series A.
