The enterprise AI agent company Ema has raised a total of $140 million, serving over 50 corporate clients, including Google and Microsoft.

Ema was founded in February 2023 by Surojit Chatterjee and Souvik Sen, headquartered in Mountain View, California, with an office in Bangalore, India. It focuses on "Universal AI Employees," allowing companies to use AI agents for roles in customer service, human resources, finance, sales, compliance, and operations. In March 2024, Ema emerged from stealth mode with $25 million in funding led by Accel, Section 32, and Prosus Ventures; the Series A round was later expanded to about $50 million with participation from KPMG, bringing the total funding to approximately $61 million by 2024. Reports in August indicated that Ema is negotiating a new round of funding of about $80 million with Bangalore-based growth investment firm Creaegis, valuing the company at around $800 million, which aligns closely with the disclosed total of $140 million.

Ema's early investors include notable firms such as Wipro Ventures, Venture Highway, and AME Cloud Ventures; individual investors include former Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg, Asana co-founder Dustin Moskovitz, Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang, and Roblox CEO David Baszucki. CEO Chatterjee previously served as Chief Product Officer at Coinbase, overseeing its IPO, and held the position of Vice President of Product for mobile ads and shopping at Google, with approximately 40 patents. Co-founder Souvik Sen was previously Vice President of Engineering at Okta and worked on data and machine learning engineering at Google, holding 37 patents.

On the product side, Ema launched three major centers—HR, IT, and Finance—on September 1. The HR center covers onboarding, benefits, coaching, and workforce planning; the IT center addresses asset, permission, identity management, and ticketing; and the Finance center manages payroll, hours, reimbursements, and benefits, introducing an Autopilot feature that automatically orchestrates processes based on prompts. The platform can integrate with over 250 enterprise applications and uses its proprietary EmaFusion multi-model routing system to manage over 30 large models, claiming better performance than GPT-4 at significantly lower costs. This year, Ema also launched Ema Recruiter, an AI agent covering the entire recruitment process from sourcing to onboarding, and received certification as a Microsoft AI Solutions Partner for the financial services industry.

In client cases, IT services giant Wipro has deployed Ema across over 240,000 employees in 65 countries, handling 2.9 million employee inquiries annually, reducing response times from days to seconds, increasing employee satisfaction by 20%, and automating over 100 processes in payroll, benefits, hours, and procurement. Hitachi, ADP, and PwC are also using the Ema platform. CEO Chatterjee stated, "Employees do not think in terms of HR, IT, or payroll; they just want to get things done."

Market-wise, this is part of the ongoing capital influx into the AI agent sector, not driven by a single event. Buyers include large enterprises looking to replace shared service centers and outsourced labor with AI, as well as venture capital and growth funds betting on "AI employees" to replace software subscriptions and human outsourcing. Funding is shifting from traditional SaaS and business process outsourcing (BPO) to enterprise AI agent platforms. Beneficiaries include AI agent companies like Ema that can directly take over HR, IT, and finance processes, as well as Google and Microsoft, which provide underlying models and cloud computing power; pressured are traditional HR and IT service software that charge per employee seat, and Indian IT outsourcing companies that rely on human scale for profit, with Wipro being both an investor and client of Ema while also being affected.
