Elon Musk posted that power generation is the best indicator of any large economy's true strength; he cited a16z's chart stating "energy capacity = economic capacity" and pointed out that there are no wealthy countries with low power generation.

a16z previously released a chart emphasizing the correlation between energy capacity and economic capacity, clearly stating that "there are no wealthy countries with low power generation"; Musk has also repeatedly viewed power output as the best proxy for industrial capacity, stating that useful energy output is the foundation of the economy, similar to sunlight for ecosystems.

He noted that the production of goods and services in any country is generally proportional to its energy output; in the context of the expansion of AI, data centers, and manufacturing, power has become a hard constraint on growth, with the inability to supply power for GPU procurement equating to expensive paper assets.

Discussions involving former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger and others have pointed out that U.S. power capacity has stagnated for years due to coal retirements and renewable energy replacements, limiting overall economic capacity; China's power output is significantly higher than the combined output of the U.S. and EU, making the energy gap a real factor in AI and manufacturing competition.

This statement re-anchors economic strength from monetary or nominal indicators to dispatchable power output; capital and attention are directed towards generation, grid, and storage projects that can increase reliable power capacity, benefiting economies and industries with abundant power while being pressured under power bottlenecks in data centers and high-energy manufacturing.

Musk also emphasized that the economy is not fixed, and increasing energy supply and improving output per joule can make the world wealthier.
