The venture capital firm Collaborative Fund has acquired a stake in D.C. United, the Major League Soccer team based in Washington, D.C., and its home stadium rights. Founder Craig Shapiro told TechCrunch that this move aims to provide a showcase for the startups the fund invests in. The transaction amount and shareholding percentage have not been disclosed in this newsflash.

Shapiro, a local of Washington, D.C., founded Collaborative Fund in 2010, managing over $1 billion in publicly reported assets, with early bets on companies like Reddit, Lyft, Upstart, The Farmer’s Dog, OLIPOP, Speak, and WHOOP. In 2024, he and his spouse invested in the local women's professional team, DC Power FC. In recent years, the fund also led a $575 million Series G round for WHOOP. By combining the club and stadium as a single asset, it integrates consumer and sports scenarios into the same investment portfolio.

The team's home stadium, Audi Field, has a capacity of approximately 20,000 and opened in 2018. The city council is currently reviewing a public-private partnership renovation plan costing about $620 million: expanding the capacity by at least 8,000 seats and adding a climate-controlled roof, allowing for year-round events from mid-summer to April of the following year. The club plans to contribute about $320 million, while the district will provide approximately $300 million over five years. Mayor Muriel Bowser has publicly opposed this, stating that the district has already committed funds for the renovation of Capital One Arena and the new stadium for the Washington Commanders. City Council Chairman Phil Mendelson is scheduled to hold a hearing on October 23. The renovation financing has not yet been finalized, and the capital expenditures for the stadium remain uncertain as new shareholders enter.

The MLS franchise rights and stadium revenues are tied to ticket sales, licensing, naming rights, and concert bookings. The added capacity will increase sellable opportunities on non-game days, making it more valuable for consumer brands and startups to showcase their products. Shapiro describes the investment as a brand showcase rather than merely pursuing league rankings. The ownership list already includes several individuals and firms like Reimagined Ventures, and this investment represents a fund-level entry.

Washington's sports assets are concurrently contending with the new Commanders stadium, the renovation of venues under Monumental Sports, and league scheduling reforms. The VC investment connects the early fund's LP network to ticket sales and suites, while also turning unresolved public subsidy negotiations into investor risk.

From a market mechanism perspective, this is a scenario asset allocation, not a transfer window. The buyer seeks to provide the invested companies with exposure and client hosting scenarios in the capital; the seller needs to supplement private capital for the stadium renovation through club equity. The funds entering the team and venue rights may still depend on the council's decision to offset the $300 million municipal contribution. Beneficiaries are the invested companies hosting press conferences and client days; those under pressure are the municipal budget opposing further funding for the venue and the club's finances, which have not yet covered the renovation through ticket revenues. The event is driven by the fund's announcement of its stake acquisition.

On a supplementary level, DC Power FC shares the Audi Field ecosystem with D.C. United, but the equity structures differ. Until the renovation bill is passed, the stake acquired is in the existing 20,000-seat venue plus renovation options.
