Digital human company Tavus has launched Phoenix-4.5, claiming it to be the fastest and most expressive real-time human rendering model on the market, with richer facial animations, more pronounced emotions and micro-movements, and actions extending to the upper body. They state this is the closest artificial intelligence has come to passing the Turing test in face-to-face interactions.

The company's white paper states that the latency from audio to video is 134 milliseconds, about 25% faster than other models they claim exist on the market, and it generates complete frames rather than just rendering faces, achieving around 40 frames per second in real-time. The rendering object has expanded from "a face" to a PAL that synchronizes head, shoulders, posture, and torso. In internal tests, 64% of faces that failed training on Phoenix-4 succeeded on 4.5. Comparison tables show an increase in audio-visual speech recognition and perception differences, with FID and FVD decreasing. The model is described as a Gaussian-diffusion architecture that can switch between over a dozen emotional states, avoiding a looping video-style nodding.

Tavus sells the rendering layer along with the perception model Raven and the dialogue turn model Sparrow, positioning the interface as an embeddable face-to-face video agent. The early version of Phoenix generated avatars from one or two minutes of video, combining audio-driven 3D models, body rendering, and 2D generative networks. The Turing test-like statement is a marketing phrase, not a conclusion from third-party double-blind experiments.

The competitive point for real-time digital humans has shifted from "looking like a photo" to "does the shoulder move when speaking, does it nod while listening". The 134 milliseconds advances conversation from perceivable delay to close to the experience of video calls, making it possible for customer service, sales, and educational scenarios to replace looping segments with generated frames.

In market mechanics, this is an interface subscription, not movie-level offline rendering. Buyers are product teams wanting to embed a moving face in video calls; sellers are Tavus, which creates APIs for latency and expressions. Beneficiaries are applications that have integrated their conversational video interface; those under pressure are virtual anchor tools still relying on pre-recorded segments and fixed lip-syncing. Funding flows to rendering computing power based on conversation minutes and seats.
