At the Michigan Democratic nomination convention, the vice chair mispronounced a tribe's name while reading a statement, which was corrected on-site.

The opening of the Obama Presidential Center also began with a land acknowledgment before continuing to use the site for events, which opponents seized upon as "acknowledgment without restitution." In British Columbia, Canada, a legislator pushed to ban public officials from reading land acknowledgments that belittle the country's history, but the bill failed to pass its first reading. Musk himself wrote in March that if the Americas use the concept of "indigenous peoples," then European groups such as the English, French, and Spanish should also be recognized as indigenous by the same standard.

In market terms, this is a transaction of attention rather than goods: the buyers are media and event organizers treating cultural ceremonies as political signals, while the sellers are platform traffic. The event was driven by the ceremonial clash during midterm election week, with funds flowing into political ads and platform interactions rather than hot dog shelves. Benefiting are accounts that can amplify a sarcastic remark into a rallying cry, while under pressure are institutional communication departments tasked with writing statements as compliance actions— the more routine the ceremony, the easier it is to be perceived as performance.
