Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev stated that the U.S. is entering the era of asset tokenization after the SEC approved a temporary, conditional exemption allowing limited on-chain tokenized stock trading.

The exemption is aimed at tokenized securities venues, allowing them to trade tokenized NMS stocks with licensed automated market makers and liquidity pools, with conditional exemptions from exchange definitions; some entities providing liquidity to the pool with their own capital are exempt from dealer definitions. Contracts must be publicly auditable and deployed on a public permissionless ledger, trading must be synchronized with halts on the primary listing exchange, and there are caps on the underlying and transaction, with a five-year expiration.

Tenev has been pushing to move stocks and bonds onto the blockchain in recent years, and the company has launched Robinhood Chain for real asset tokenization, offering stock tokens with 1:1 economic exposure to U.S. stocks in some overseas markets, allowing for longer trading hours. This exemption covers U.S. entities and licensed venues but does not automatically grant existing token products in brokerage apps national market status.

On the same day, Chair Atkins will issue an order as a step taken with existing authority after the market structure bill failed to pass the Senate. Permissionless peer-to-peer agreements are explicitly excluded from this exemption.

Mechanically, this is an event-driven narrative connecting retail brokerages to a regulatory sandbox. Beneficiaries are retail gateways that have laid out tokenized stocks and their own chains, which can write "the era has arrived" into customer acquisition; pressured parties are traditional exchanges that still charge based on daily auctions and central limit order books. Actual transactions remain constrained by symbols and volume caps; funds will not be overnight moved out of the NYSE, but valuation themes will tie brokerage stocks and custody chains in the same transaction.
