The advisory group is based at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, with initial members including François Charles, Camillo De Lellis, Timothy Gowers, Martin Hairer, Nikhil Srivastava, Ulrike Tillmann, Ravi Vakil, Edward Witten, and Melanie Matchett Wood. The group claims the ability to proactively offer advice, publicly comment on the company's impact on mathematics, and self-determine its members; it has no decision-making power, with company decisions remaining the responsibility of the company. Members will not receive compensation.

The announcement follows the company's claim that an internal model trained since August 28 has resolved over 100 pending issues, including statements related to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize Problem. Previously, the mathematics community had issued an open letter urging AI companies to interact cautiously with academia. The advisory group's role is to serve as a bridge, not a review committee, and it does not control the internal training pace.

The buying side seeks to lend academic publishing credibility to the model outputs; the selling side is skeptical that the advisory group can constrain the pace of releases. The event is driven by the official formation of the group and the member list. Beneficiaries include OpenAI, which needs a legitimate pathway, and top mathematicians invited to the table; those under pressure include the dissemination methods that treat model outputs as theorems.

The market is trading on how the release rights will be involved by the academic community, not whether the theorems have been accepted by the community.
