Ram Parameswaran, founder and CIO of investment firm octahedron, suggested that public company CEOs should follow Uber's example by allowing CFOs to establish a large public audience with the investor relations team to counter false panic and state the company's position.

He gave an "A+" rating to Uber CFO Balaji Krishnamurthy for publicly rebutting a weekly chart from Andreessen Horowitz. The chart cited data suggesting that Uber's price increases in the U.S. were significantly higher than Lyft's. Krishnamurthy wrote that aggregated statistics often lead to misleading conclusions, noting that Uber tracks the same metrics weekly while controlling for trip types and geographic structure.

The benchmark used by Uber is called the standardized price index: comparing quotes for UberX and Lyft Standard at the same starting point, destination, and time period. The company claims this index has long been close to 1.0, with a pricing strategy aimed at being as cheap as possible while remaining competitive. Without structural controls, apparent price increases stem from two types of combinations: more passengers opting for higher-priced new premium products; and an increase in the share of trips over 15 kilometers, as suburban and low-density markets grow faster.

Krishnamurthy joined Uber in 2019 after working at Goldman Sachs, where he was responsible for strategic finance and investor relations. He will succeed the departing Prashanth Mahendra-Rajah as CFO in February 2026 and serves as a director at autonomous driving company Waabi. Since taking office, he has consistently explained on public platforms that autonomous driving will not cannibalize ride-hailing and has stated that autonomous driving is expected to expand the U.S. addressable market to over $1 trillion, while emphasizing that commercialization lags behind technology itself.

Uber's recent operational data coincides with this public relations battle: total orders in Q2 increased by 22% year-on-year to over $58 billion, non-GAAP earnings per share rose by 35%, and free cash flow exceeded $10 billion for the first time in the past twelve months. The company is also advancing autonomous driving tests and licensing with partners such as Pony.ai, Wayve, Baidu Apollo, Motional, and Zoox in multiple cities.

In market mechanisms, the buyers are public shareholders reading thematic research reports and short narratives, while the sellers are the financial teams moving investor relations from closed-door calls to public information flows. The event was triggered by external charts, and the flow of funds is still determined by order volumes and buybacks, but the struggle for explanatory power affects short-term valuation fluctuations. Companies that can directly calibrate portfolio biases benefit, while those that only publish unstandardized price curves face pressure from sell-side research.
