Market intelligence firm Sensor Tower estimates that pre-orders for "GTA VI" have reached approximately 4.6 million. The Washington Post cited this figure while Netflix launched a 27-minute extended gameplay video, resulting in a surge in viewership.

Earlier public trackers showed that as of August 18, pre-orders were about 4.38 million, including returns, with estimated revenue of approximately $429 million; of these, about 3.38 million were for PlayStation 5, accounting for 77% and approximately $331 million, while Xbox Series X|S had just over 1 million, accounting for 23% and approximately $98 million. Pre-orders opened at midnight local time on June 25, with the standard edition priced at $79.99 and the ultimate edition at $99.99. Sensor Tower noted that about 89% of orders were for the $100 ultimate edition, with Xbox around 90% and PlayStation about 88.5%, significantly higher than the industry norm of 10% to 20% for premium editions.

Take-Two has not yet released official pre-order numbers. CEO Strauss Zelnick described the scale as "unprecedented and shocking," while stating that it cannot be extrapolated using conventional curves; the company informed analysts that orders are skewed towards higher-priced versions. Analyst Kontus stated that if extrapolated based on typical pre-launch curves, the current figure of about 4 million could translate to 40 million before launch, but he believes it is more likely to settle around 25 million, corresponding to about $2 billion in revenue, sufficient to cover development and most marketing costs. Take-Two reiterated its net bookings outlook for fiscal year 2027 at $8 billion to $8.2 billion and confirmed a release on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox, with digital pre-load on November 12, and physical copies containing download codes.

This is a third-party model, not a settlement statement from the platform or publisher. Rockstar has delayed the release date twice: originally set for Fall 2025, then moved to May 26, 2026, and finally to November 19. The marketing campaign will only begin two months after pre-orders, indicating that the current numbers are still in the "hardcore early orders, mainstream yet to come" phase.

In 2013, "GTA V" generated about $800 million on its first day, and this generation has locked in nearly half a billion dollars in revenue before major marketing has begun, with both unit price and premium edition proportions higher than the previous generation. The PC version has not yet been announced, with console platforms first to capitalize.

From a market mechanism perspective, the buyers are console users willing to prepay $80 to $100 for a single-player game that has not yet been playable, while the seller is Rockstar under Take-Two; the transaction is driven by the pre-order window, not post-release review cycles. Funds flow from the more densely populated Sony ecosystem to the publisher's pre-order revenue, with PS5 taking about 80% of the share. The beneficiaries are Take-Two, which can confirm cash flow in advance, and Sony, which is tied to the console; the pressured parties are Xbox's share and the yet-to-launch PC channel, as well as the overheated expectations treating pre-orders as guaranteed sales—Zelnick himself has deliberately separated pre-orders from final sales.
