Google has launched the Gemini Student Hub, a learning notebook, and interactive 3D visualization tools, offering eligible university students a year of free Google AI subscription to expand the use of Gemini in educational settings.

The Student Hub is integrated into the Gemini app, combining access to learning notebooks, flashcards, and practice quizzes; this feature will be gradually rolled out to individual accounts that support Gemini's languages, with accounts issued by educational institutions and support for younger users meeting age requirements to be launched in the coming weeks.

The learning notebook allows students to upload their own materials such as lecture notes and course outlines, from which Gemini generates study plans, diagnostic quizzes, short courses, and progress dashboards; Google plans to add charts, images, and the ability to extract exam and assignment dates from course outlines to add to Google Calendar with permission in future versions.

The interactive visualization feature can generate tables, grids, and operable 3D simulations based on questions. For example, when a user asks about DNA structure, they can rotate and zoom in on the 3D model; Google also demonstrated interactive presentations of energy transfer in a pendulum and cash burn rates. These features are being gradually rolled out to users of the Gemini app starting today.

Eligible university students in the U.S. can receive 12 months of Google AI Pro for free, normally priced at $19.99 per month, which includes four times the usage quota, Gemini Spark, Gemini within Gmail and Google Docs, and 5TB of storage; eligible students in over 140 markets outside the U.S. can receive one year of Google AI Plus, offering double the usage quota, Gemini Omni, and 400GB of storage. Students must verify through SheerID and provide a payment method; if not canceled after 12 months, it will convert to a paid subscription, with redemption valid until December 31, 2026.

In market mechanics, the buyers are students and educational institutions seeking assignment organization, personalized quizzes, and complex concept visualizations, with Google subsidizing user entry barriers through free subscriptions and storage quotas. The cash flow is not charged immediately but is retained within Google's ecosystem through cloud storage, Gemini usage habits, and Google Workspace collaboration, while OpenAI, Anthropic, and educational technology platforms face rising customer acquisition costs and pressure from feature homogenization.
