The "publicly held debt" of the United States has risen to about 100%-101% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), marking the first time this level has been reached since the end of World War II in 1946. This milestone data was released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) on April 30, corresponding to the GDP data for the 12 months ending in March this year.

As of the end of April this year, the size of the publicly held debt in the US was $31.27 trillion, while the nominal GDP for the same period (April 2025 to March 2026) was $31.22 trillion, resulting in a debt-to-GDP ratio of approximately 100%-101%. The historical peak of this ratio was 106% at the end of World War II in 1946. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) predicts that this ratio will continue to rise in the coming years, reaching 108% by 2030, surpassing the historical record set in 1946, and further increasing to 120% within the next decade.

It is important to note that "publicly held debt" (excluding intergovernmental holdings, such as Social Security trust funds) is a different metric from the "total national debt" commonly cited in the media. Based on total national debt, US national debt surpassed $40 trillion on August 19 (Wednesday), just five months after breaking the $39 trillion mark in March this year. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicts that based on total national debt and nominal GDP, the US debt-to-GDP ratio will be approximately 125.8% by 2026, higher than the 103.7% in 2012.

The US national debt took nearly 200 years to grow from zero to the first trillion dollars (reached in 1981), but has doubled in the past decade and quadrupled in less than twenty years. Maya MacGuineas, chair of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, stated, "The debt level has now exceeded 100% of GDP, and surpassing the historical record is just a matter of time."

The US government currently pays over $1 trillion annually in interest on the national debt, exceeding the $918 billion defense budget, making it the second-largest fiscal expenditure item after Social Security. In the first ten months of the fiscal year 2026, interest payments increased by 15% year-on-year. Jonathan Williams, president of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), pointed out that "net interest payments on the national debt have now exceeded $1 trillion annually," warning that the current debt level threatens the US's defense readiness.

As of the end of June this year, approximately 76% of US national debt is held by domestic entities (Federal Reserve, government accounts, US banks, pension and mutual funds, insurance companies, state and local governments, and households), while 24.1% (about $9.27 trillion) is held by foreign investors, with Japan being the largest single foreign creditor, holding $1.12 trillion (12% of total foreign holdings). The most directly impacted is the long-end interest rate market—during the week when total national debt surpassed $40 trillion in August, the yield on 30-year US Treasury bonds rose to a 19-year high, and the 30-year mortgage rate approached 6.7%; the ongoing expansion of the fiscal deficit (current fiscal year deficit has exceeded $2 trillion) is also a direct reason for the recent increase in short-term Treasury bond issuance and enhanced buyback operations by the US Treasury.

The speed of debt expansion is directly related to presidential terms—during Trump's second term, which lasted only 18 months, the new national debt exceeded $3.5 trillion, and combined with the $9.8 trillion added during his first term, the total new national debt reached $13.3 trillion, surpassing the $13.2 trillion increase during Obama's two terms (adjusted for inflation); the CBO predicts that by the end of fiscal year 2028, the total US national debt will reach $43.3 trillion. In the structure of federal budget expenditures for 2025, Social Security accounts for 22.5%, Medicare about 14%, defense spending 13%, while interest payments have reached 13.8%, surpassing defense spending for the first time. The Wharton School's budget model estimates that the rational upper limit for the US national debt-to-GDP ratio is about 210%, and if healthcare cost growth maintains historical levels, this limit could be reached in as little as 19 years.
