Within two weeks of the launch of Meta's AI agent Muse, the e-commerce and payment sectors have split on whether to allow proxy ordering: Shopify, Stripe, PayPal, Instacart, Expedia, Ticketmaster, and OpenTable have integrated; Amazon has cut off site shopping.

On September 8, Muse was launched in the U.S. for adult users, allowing checkout via Stripe's Link: either directly deducting from saved payment methods or generating a one-time virtual card for that transaction, becoming the first AI agent to be included in Link's purchase protection, covering damage, price drops, and no-fee returns. On September 21, Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke announced that all Shopify stores would enable Shop Pay for Muse and included Meta in its proxy storefront channels; on the same day, Amazon issued a warning about unauthorized AI usage terms, demanding Meta remove Amazon from the experience, citing reasons including lack of prior notice, not indicating identity while browsing, and potential retention of customer credentials. Meta stated that the AI agent cannot see passwords or payment methods. PayPal later confirmed that checkout is available in its global merchant network, including Mastercard Agent Pay, with stock prices rising nearly 5% that day.

Instacart can generate shopping carts with a single sentence for delivery; Expedia is used for hotel bookings; OpenTable can make restaurant reservations; Ticketmaster helps discover shows and seating prices, with payment still redirecting to its site. Muse also opened a platform directory for merchants to build their own connectors. Browser simulation paths can be intercepted by websites at any time, while interface paths hand over inventory, payment, and fulfillment to partners. About ten days after launch, Muse rose to the top of the free app chart in the U.S., and Meta's stock price closed up over 11% on the day of the ban news. Zuckerberg mentioned that a small portion of transaction facilitation fees might be charged, potentially borne by merchants.

Booking, Airbnb, Uber, and Lyft have yet to announce formal connectors for Muse or equivalent bans. Amazon had previously sued Perplexity's shopping AI and has gone through initial reviews and appeals regarding related bans this year.

In market mechanics, buyers are U.S. users who want to delegate search, price comparison, and ordering to AI agents, while sellers are closed retail entrances for payment and open-source merchant networks. If orders still fall on Amazon, advertising, recommendations, and membership entrances may be intercepted by Muse. Funds flow from Shop Pay, Link, and PayPal fees to the open camp, while Amazon uses the ban to guard in-app search and advertising. The event is driven by interface confrontations. Beneficiaries are companies that do not own the final retail entrance but only take a cut from payments and storefront infrastructure; pressured parties are conglomerates that bundle search, advertising, membership, and warehousing in the same application.

Shopify stated that in Q1 2026, AI is expected to increase store visits by about 8 times year-on-year, resulting in approximately 13 times more orders.
