Mikhail Gorbachev filmed a TV commercial for Pizza Hut in November 1997 at Red Square and a Pizza Hut location in Moscow, which premiered on January 1, 1998, during the Rose Bowl football game in the U.S., featuring Russian dialogue with English subtitles, but it was not aired in Russia.

The advertising agency was BBDO, and the product was Pizza Hut's then-promoted The Edge pizza. Gorbachev, wearing a hat and coat, entered the restaurant with his approximately 10-year-old granddaughter Anastasia Virganskaya. A nearby table debated his political legacy: the father blamed economic chaos, the son claimed it led to freedom, and the mother interrupted, saying, "Because of him, we have many things, like Pizza Hut," with the whole room raising their glasses in tribute to Gorbachev.

He himself did not eat pizza, only drank coffee, while his granddaughter had the pizza. His wife Raisa was concerned about his reputation and requested final approval of the footage. The payment was never officially disclosed, but The New York Times reported it was close to $1 million, which he said would be used for the Gorbachev Foundation's library and reform archives. The chain invested about $45 million in advertising for the product.

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, hyperinflation devalued pensions, putting pressure on the foundation's salary payments and building projects. He refused other endorsements, explaining that pizza was "a matter for the people—food." Russian media generally criticized the ad, while the U.S. viewed it as imagery of capitalism entering after the Cold War.

In market terms, what is sold is the face of a former head of state, and what is bought is brand memory in a Super Bowl-level broadcast window. Funds flowed from fast food advertising budgets to personal foundations; the beneficiaries were chains needing historical symbols to overshadow price wars, while the pressured party was a former leader whose domestic reputation had waned, only able to sell symbols to foreign media. The event was driven by a cash gap during the transition period, rather than restaurant equity.
