Former Sequoia Capital head Michael Moritz appeared on Patrick O'Shaughnessy's podcast "Invest Like the Best" for about 72 minutes, discussing his new memoir "Ausländer," refugee families, and observations about figures like Steve Jobs and Elon Musk, bringing top entrepreneurs down from their pedestals. He joined Sequoia in 1986 and co-led the firm with Doug Leone from 1995 to 2012, investing in Google, Yahoo, PayPal, and Stripe.

For decades, he has asked founders about their most isolated moments when they had to solve problems alone, believing that those who build lasting companies often learn early not to rely on others; resilience is shaped in childhood, and the same scars can make them difficult to work with. The price of achievement is often not having enough time for family, and those close to them may get hurt; those who can create extremes are rarely well-rounded individuals, and the deeper you understand them, the harder it is to idolize them.

In 1982, he followed Jobs for a Time magazine piece, but after the edited version came out with a sharp tone, Jobs stopped speaking to him. Don Valentine valued Moritz's ability to identify people and deconstruct narratives, bringing him into Sequoia and instilling the principle that investing should focus on people rather than market size and business plans. Discussing Lee Iacocca, he noted that those driven by proven desire can both create and destroy; regarding Ferguson, he observed that he could nurture talent but would also let go of players regardless of their fame when their value was exhausted.

He stated that after identifying quality companies and sectors, the hardest part is resisting intervention and holding firm, as busyness creates the illusion of effort, and most actions erode returns. Truly disruptive ideas often seem absurd at the outset; without strength, obsession is merely fantasy. Discussing Musk: the same force that creates cross-industry miracles also exacts a toll on him and those around him. Insiders are bound by rules, while outsiders' ignorance and detachment can become weapons. Sectors, markets, and products may change, but founders are the only constant.

His parents fled Nazi Germany as Jewish refugees and restarted from scratch in Wales, leading him to view survival as a prerequisite and to relativize "seemingly huge risks": resilience is not the absence of fear, but moving forward with fear. He offers three pieces of advice to young entrepreneurs: recognize the demands of business on themselves and their loved ones; do not let praise distort judgment; and live in the present. Balancing career and life is extremely rare, often at the expense of the closest relationships.

In market mechanisms, this is about cognitive supply rather than transactions: buyers are investors looking for people, wanting to hold, and willing to tolerate founders' flaws; sellers are retired GPs who have made their methods of identifying people public over forty years. Capital does not flow in and out of portfolios; it is about who deserves to be held long-term. Beneficiaries are early funds that still prioritize people as the first variable; those under pressure are newcomers treating business plans and sector narratives as tradable assets. Event-driven is about memoirs and extended interviews, not new fund closures.

Not intervening is harder to price than intervening.
