Elon Musk and his brother Kimbal Musk had a falling out over restaurant funding. Kimbal, who runs restaurants in several U.S. cities, faced financial difficulties and sought a loan from his brother. Elon initially agreed, but after his financial assistant reviewed the restaurant's financial records, he changed his mind, believing the businesses could not continue and advised Kimbal to close them.

Kimbal did not speak to his brother for a long time and even considered severing ties. He compared this to when he personally invested in Tesla during tough times. According to public biographies, in early 2008, Elon asked Kimbal to invest his available funds into Tesla, leading Kimbal to sell $375,000 worth of Apple stock. During the crisis months for Tesla, he interrupted his honeymoon to stay almost full-time at the company, neglecting his restaurant business.

Eventually, money did come into the restaurant, allowing it to survive, but their relationship did not recover. Kimbal still felt as though he had lost his brother. For about six weeks, they did not speak. Kimbal later reached out, not wanting to lose the brother with whom he grew up and started businesses. Elon shook hands as if nothing had happened. Kimbal later interpreted this as his brother's habit of prioritizing rationality over personal feelings.

The two brothers' capital journey began with Zip2, which they co-founded in 1995. The company was sold for $307 million in cash in 1999, with Kimbal receiving about $15 million before taxes. In 2004, he opened The Kitchen in Boulder, Colorado, later expanding to Denver, Chicago, and Austin. He joined Tesla's board in 2004 and served on SpaceX's board from 2002 to 2022.

The restaurant and the car business are not on the same financial ledger. Forbes estimates that Kimbal's wealth mainly comes from small equity stakes in Tesla and SpaceX, not from restaurant profits. Since 2010, he has sold hundreds of millions in Tesla stock, with his board term lasting until 2027. During the pandemic in 2020, Next Door closed some locations, and the distribution of an employee emergency fund also sparked controversy. The restaurant's survival does not mean it was considered a recoverable investment by his brother.

This is about risk control of family funds, not restaurant mergers. The buyer is a struggling restaurant company, while the seller is a brother who decides based on financial records. The event was driven by the financial assistant's judgment on sustainability. The money went from a verbal commitment back to what could be recovered, while equity wealth remains in Tesla and SpaceX. The beneficiary is Elon, who did not allow restaurant losses to affect his main business cash flow, while Kimbal, who valued brotherly affection, was rejected based on store performance.
