Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong posted that there is a huge innovation space with the overlap of AI and crypto, and now is the best time for builders. He announced that Coinbase has become a founding partner of the Horowitz Andreessen Academy, collaborating with a group of tech companies to select and nurture the next batch of founders.

The academy, incubated by Andreessen Horowitz, operates independently, is for-profit, and does not offer degree certification. It is located in San Francisco and targets high school graduates or college freshmen and sophomores who aspire to start businesses or enter tech companies. The founding dean, Gagan Biyani, co-founded Udemy and Maven. The first fellowship is tuition-free for one year, with about 50 participants, starting in the fall of 2027, and applications are now open; a two-year program is planned for 2028 with tuition close to that of elite private universities, pending regulatory approval. The academy has raised $42 million, with A16Z contributing about $35 million, and Marc Andreessen and Erik Torenberg joining the board.

Other nine founding partners include Anduril, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Nvidia, OpenAI, Palantir, Replit, and Stripe, providing computing power and hardware, co-designing courses, internships, and collaboration positions. Over 40 recruiting partners include Applied Intuition, Databricks, Notion, Shopify, etc. Students are promised over $50,000 in computing power credits and a $5,000 travel research budget. About 75% to 80% of the course time is project-based, emphasizing portfolios over grades, with admissions including portfolios, interviews, and IQ tests. The faculty and guest list includes Sam Altman, Armstrong, Dylan Field, Amjad Masad, Naval Ravikant, Andreessen, and others.

A16Z states that there are over 850 companies in its portfolio with more than 19,000 job vacancies available. Revenue planning includes future tuition, corporate collaborations, and equity in companies founded by students. Armstrong's relationship with A16Z dates back to a $25 million investment in 2013, and personnel from both sides remain intertwined after Coinbase went public. He describes the academy as a talent funnel for AI and crypto, rather than a marketing activity for the exchange.

Mechanically, it targets 16 to 22-year-olds willing to move to the Bay Area to exchange their work for networking opportunities, while offering alternatives to traditional four-year degrees and the "dropout-to-startup" path. The event-driven aspect is that after the academy's announcement, the exchange's leader took the stage. Funding comes from venture capital and tech company sponsorships for the tuition-free first year and computing power credits; beneficiaries include A16Z's early hiring pipeline and Coinbase's brand among crypto builders, while traditional university computer science departments and accelerators face pressure competing for the same young programmers. Crypto is woven into the narrative, while the course's main axis remains AI-native projects.
