Robinhood has begun rolling out cryptocurrency trading services to eligible users in the UK, allowing them to trade over 50 digital assets within the main app. The service is provided by Bitstamp UK Ltd., a subsidiary of Robinhood that is registered with the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). The first batch of users will start gaining access this week.

The new feature adds cryptocurrency to Robinhood's existing product line in the UK, which includes US stocks, ISAs, options, and futures. Robinhood claims that there are no trading commissions, account maintenance fees, or custody fees for crypto trading; however, users still need to be aware of bid-ask spreads, network fees, asset price volatility, and third-party liquidity execution costs, as zero commission does not mean there are no hidden costs.

Robinhood did not apply for UK crypto qualifications from scratch but acquired Bitstamp for approximately $200 million in 2025 to gain local compliance and trading infrastructure. Bitstamp UK has been registered as an FCA crypto asset service provider since 2023, offering fiat trading, crypto asset exchanges, and custody services. Robinhood has integrated these services into its main app, allowing UK users to trade stocks, derivatives, and crypto assets without switching to a separate exchange.

This launch occurs ahead of further clarification of the UK's crypto regulatory framework. The UK government plans to implement a more comprehensive regulatory framework for crypto assets by 2027. Robinhood has chosen to expand its retail product range before the regulatory transition window, leveraging Bitstamp's existing FCA registration while accumulating users, trading volume, and compliance operational experience. Robinhood has previously launched crypto services in the EU and expanded perpetual futures trading in Europe, with the UK crypto launch being part of its international strategy for a "full-service investment app."

In market mechanics, UK retail investors are the buyers of Robinhood's crypto services, while Robinhood and Bitstamp provide in-app trading access, asset custody, liquidity execution, and brand trust. Traditional local exchanges, brokers, and crypto apps will face user asset migration and zero-commission competition; Robinhood can enhance the long-term value of each customer through trading spreads, order execution, asset cross-selling, subscription products, future staking, and institutional services. Beneficiaries include Bitstamp's liquidity network, market makers, custody infrastructure, and Robinhood's user growth in the UK; those under pressure are retail trading platforms with single functions, high fees, or lacking compliance brand endorsement.
