Sam Parr posted after the show that Whatnot is valued at $20 billion. In the AI bubble, this number is thrown around casually, but its size exceeds the combined market value of Wendy’s, Under Armour, Hertz, Harley-Davidson, and American Airlines, and the company built this in just six and a half years.

Whatnot was founded by Grant LaFontaine and Logan Head in 2019, starting from the Funko Pop collectibles market, and expanded significantly after entering live auctions in July 2020. The public trajectory is: approximately $2.3 million in transactions in 2020, about $163 million in 2021, and around $1 billion GMV in 2022; projected live transaction volume of about $8 billion for the entire year of 2025, with GMV in the first half of 2026 already exceeding the total for 2025. The platform claims to hold nearly 60% of the $22 billion live e-commerce market in North America and Europe.

The latest round is a $545 million Series G, led by ICONIQ, Lightspeed, and Avra, with a post-money valuation of $20 billion, nearly doubling from the $11.5 billion valuation in the Series F round in October 2025, with total funding around $1.5 billion. The two co-founders are each valued at over $2.8 billion on paper. The funds are intended for seller tools, integrating AI into the sales process, market expansion, and increasing buyer reach.

The business model is based on commission from live transactions: sellers must appear on camera to showcase physical items, with categories expanding from trading cards, sports cards, and sneakers to fashion. The commission ranges from about 8% to 11%, with projected revenue around $1 billion for 2025. The company faces competition from eBay, Fanatics, and TikTok Shop Live, especially from lower-commission short video e-commerce.

Buyers come from growth funds treating live e-commerce as an expandable consumer entry point, as well as late-stage capital from secondary market investors buying out old shareholders; selling pressure mainly comes from old shareholders cashing out and skepticism about "non-AI companies also achieving AI-level valuations." The event-driven narrative is clear: a founder's discussion reinterprets the $20 billion valuation as the sum of five established public companies, reinforcing the premium for scarce consumer platforms. Beneficiaries include Whatnot and its top sellers, while traditional e-commerce and retail brands reliant on shelf searches face pressure from stagnating growth.

The market trades on the commission rights of "attention directly converting into transactions," not another generic large model story.
