Imaging appointment platform Scan.com has completed a $220 million equity and debt financing round, aiming to establish a nationwide medical imaging network in the U.S. that connects examination centers, referrals, and report returns using a unified interface.

The structure consists of $90 million in Series C equity and $130 million in debt. The equity round was led by Noteus Partners, with participation from Aviva, Concord Health Partners, YZR Capital, and Oxford Capital; the debt was provided by VerisFi Capital and Atempo Growth, designated for acquisitions and working capital. The company claims its revenue has doubled in the past year, with annual recurring revenue exceeding $165 million, serving over 900,000 patients globally.

The platform uses artificial intelligence to match real-time availability, pricing, and subspecialty referrals, automating appointments and documentation, and distributing imaging reports to corresponding subspecialty radiologists, claiming results are typically returned within 48 hours. The interface connects with independent imaging centers' scheduling systems and electronic medical records, allowing employer benefits platforms, health insurance, workers' compensation systems, and digital health applications to access through a single national API without needing individual integrations.

In the U.S., approximately 600 million medical imaging procedures are performed annually, yet the company states there is still no national infrastructure, with 85% of examinations relying on fax or phone appointments, often leaving patients waiting for weeks. Co-founder and CEO Charlie Bullock compares their target to Quest Diagnostics and Labcorp's integration in the testing market: testing has long been nationally networked, while imaging has not. Scan.com started in the UK in 2017 and claims to be the largest private imaging network in the UK, entering the U.S. in 2023, with significant revenue now coming from the U.S.

The funding is earmarked for two areas: continuing to expand the supply of imaging centers in the U.S. and enhancing APIs and agent-based artificial intelligence for scheduling patients, appointments, and returning diagnostic results. Reports from the UK indicate the company has approached the London Stock Exchange this week to discuss potential listing locations, while maintaining its headquarters in the UK. Previously, it raised approximately $57 million in equity financing, with Aviva participating in a $12 million Series A round.

In market mechanics, the purchase is for the premium of consolidating independent imaging centers into a priceable, schedulable inventory platform, and the acquisition capacity; the sale is for the fax scheduling and price opacity. Equity funding increases network density, while debt funding is used to directly acquire capacity. Beneficiaries include payers and digital health entry points that can access nationwide availability at once, as well as independent centers that see volume after being integrated into the network; pressured parties include local imaging shops that rely on information opacity to maintain price differentials, and hospital radiology departments that have yet to be networked. This is a network density-driven acquisition expansion, not merely a software subscription story.

The U.S. imaging market is described as exceeding $100 billion, with the company positioning itself at the level of Quest/Labcorp in the testing industry, rather than creating another appointment app.
