Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has announced the launch of a new academy named Horowitz Andreessen Academy, aimed at recent high school graduates and college dropouts, specifically designed to cultivate young people's ability to develop AI products, positioning itself as an alternative to elite university education.

The first program, called "Founding Class Fellowship," lasts one year and is scheduled to start in the fall of 2027, with an enrollment of about 50 students; a subsequent two-year program for fall 2028 admission will also be launched.

The Founding Class Fellowship program is completely free, with no tuition fees; the upcoming two-year program is expected to have tuition levels comparable to elite private universities. In terms of student support, the academy provides over $50,000 in computing power and technical resources, as well as $5,000 for travel and exploration expenses, and assists in recommending housing providers to help students arrange shared accommodations.

The admission criteria significantly differ from traditional universities, focusing primarily on applicants' completed, launched, or revenue-generating projects, rather than GPA, application essays, or standardized test scores; in other words, it is "admission based on work" rather than "admission based on grades."

The curriculum covers AI-native product development, founder-led sales, marketing strategies for enterprise clients, narrative expression, as well as practical entrepreneurship topics such as company registration, equity structure, finance, and fundraising, including leadership development in a high-ownership culture, taught by practitioners with real-world experience rather than traditional academic professors.

The academy is founded and led by Gagan Biyani, co-founder of Udemy and Maven, with board members including Marc Andreessen, Erik Torenberg, and Gagan Biyani himself; the academy has raised $42 million from a16z and several individual investors, including Adam D'Angelo, Tobi Lütke, and Tony Xu. Ben Horowitz stated: "Someone has to take the lead in exploring how to cultivate talent for this new world, which is the purpose of establishing this academy."

In terms of funding and resource flow, the $42 million startup capital comes from a16z, a leading venture capital firm, and personal contributions from several tech company founders and executives, with the funding sources being the existing capital and networking in Silicon Valley; the recipients of these resources are young talents who might have entered Ivy League or other elite universities but are now opting for direct paths into entrepreneurship and product development. For a16z, such academies essentially advance the logic of talent selection in venture capital to the talent cultivation stage, locking in potential entrepreneurs and early access to future projects, while traditional elite universities are being bypassed in the competition for this group of young talents.
