Ray Dalio, co-founder of Bridgewater, reiterated his principle of the day: every problem encountered is an opportunity, so problems must be brought to the table. He clarified that this feeling does not come naturally at first. Most people are reluctant to do this, especially when it exposes their own weaknesses or the weaknesses of those they care about. Successful people know it must be done.

This is not a new statement. The same paragraph has been shared before as a daily principle, accompanied by his long-used radical transparency framework. In another public statement, he wrote that radical transparency forces problems to the surface, and the most important and uncomfortable aspect is what people are dealing with and how they are handling it. This allows the organization to leverage the judgment of all members to solve issues. Once accustomed to it, he believes this state is more tolerable and effective than not knowing the real thoughts.

He also noted the costs. The biggest downside is that most people find it difficult to face uncomfortable realities at first. If not managed, people may interfere in matters they should not, and some may draw incorrect conclusions due to weighing incomplete information. The principles document also includes two adjacent requirements: accurate assessment, rather than benevolent assessment. Tough love is the hardest to give and the most important, as it is rarely welcomed.

This approach has been formalized at Bridgewater. Reports indicate that employees are required to log defects into a company-wide problem log, meetings are almost entirely recorded, and those accused of mistakes are questioned in front of others, with the process documented. A 2017 New York Times article cited an internal memo where a colleague wrote that Dalio sometimes made employees feel incompetent, humiliated, and overwhelmed. His reaction at the time was one of pain and surprise. On September 19 of the same year, his book "Principles" was published, and he described this moment as the starting point for overcoming personal barriers.

External records do not only reflect success stories. There is a high turnover rate among new employees, with some leaving in tears. Critics argue that these principles give permission for harsh language and question whether the approximately $160 billion in performance comes from radical transparency or if the company can afford this experiment due to its wealth. Investigative writing also noted that the problem log was once filled under weekly quotas, with entries ranging from real risks to the cafeteria peas wilting. The recording database has accumulated tens of thousands of hours.

This is a redistribution of management methods, not trading. The output is Dalio and his principles product, while the recipients are managers who bring the problem log into the company. The events are driven by the repeated delivery of daily principles. Those who benefit are organizations willing to document weaknesses and use records for personnel decisions. Those under pressure are the individuals named, as well as teams that cannot distinguish between real defects and quota-based complaints. Transparency centralizes information into the recording system and also concentrates discomfort on those exposed.
