Peter Diamandis, originally a physician, uses XPRIZE to break down high-cost problems into prizes. The $10 million Ansari X Prize bought the flight of SpaceShipOne, not a degree. Subsequent prizes for ocean exploration, literacy, and pandemic testing followed the same structure: small teams, public results, external evaluation. In 2008, he and Ray Kurzweil established Singularity University, framing the decreasing cost of technology as a course.

This time, there is no new fund for capital pathways. The post requires an investment of a friend and a real interaction, with outputs described as customers and responsibility. This differs from XPRIZE, where sponsors provide funding and participants contribute time; teenagers are asked to identify problems and charge for solutions themselves. Here, artificial intelligence is a tool, not a new laboratory he established.

A comparable model is Y Combinator, which requires founders to first do non-scalable things for users, and the first generation of personal computer clubs assembling machines outside of universities. The current position is not about Diamandis expanding the prize pool, but rather changing the participant age from adult teams to pre-graduation. Without customer numbers, there is no new validation.

Structurally, this represents a shift in pricing power. The valuation of abilities used to be at graduation and admission; he has changed it to whether real people use them. If customers appear, the certificate is no longer the starting point; if customers do not appear, the four steps are merely rhetoric. Responsibility is placed on delivery rather than age, effectively moving the risk of failure to before graduation.

A friend plus one delivery comes before a funding round.
If abilities wait for a certificate, the certificate closes the window first.
